Drawing Steps - an Illustration Pitch (Patreon)
Content
In November I was invited by "Ehrenkind" for an Illustration Pitch. They asked me if I would be interested in working with them on stationery and childrens books for their shop.
An illustrator pitch goes something like this:The company will write to several illustrators whether they are interested in working together. if so, they all get the same task, the pitch, which they work through and send to the company.
The company then uses the pitch to choose from all the illustrators with whom they would like to work.
The pitch for "Ehrenkind" was a children's book page. They explained exactly what they wanted to have drawn: A clearing in the forest with an angry wolf, who is standing in front of a frightened bear and a squirrel in a tree, cuddling up to a compass with a blissful look in their face.
There was also a whole story included in the pitch and some instructions on how they want the animals to be drawn. Like "not walking on two feet", "acting like real animals but with emotions in their face", "no clothes",...
The process went a little something like this:
First I drew some thumbnails to see how the image could look with different compositions and where the text should be
Then I focused on the characters, sketched them a couple of times until I was happy with the result, the emotions and the bodies
I finalized the sketch
I turned the opacity of the sketch down so I could use it as a reference
On new layers below the sketch, I blocked in the basic colours for each section
Then I started drawing the animals first
Next I drew the background
At the end I edit the saturation and light & shadow a bit
Hope you like this kind of short walk through an illustration process.
Wish you a lovely start of a new week!
