So, did the girl just leave? like, they didn't discuss it, she just left? Because if she just left and he wasn't expecting it and was trying to make the two of them work then that's messed up.

They hadn't loved each other for a long time, if ever. He was surprised she left, but not because of love - more because he'd been going through the motions of making it work for so long that he just didn't think about the possibility of ending it. That's why the fairy godmother says things like "what do you mean, I thought you loved her" and acknowledges his efforts to make things work, even if they were a bad match. When you think about the traditional Cinderella stories, she never really has much agency of her own - she goes from basically being a slave to putting herself in the hands of a prince. This audio is taking the next step and saying "maybe they aren't a great fit just because they met at a dance, maybe happily ever after isn't guaranteed, and maybe the fairy godmother can do more than just make other people's lives better." Maybe Cinderella writes her prince a note and says she needs to go have her own adventures, and then she just leaves - which isn't very nice and not what you'd expect her to do, but then, maybe none of it is as black and white as it seems.
