I went to Catholic schools from age 5-22. In elementary school, they used to have assemblies where we had to watch the nuns spank the “naughty” children with a paddle that had holes in it. In first grade, Eric was duct taped onto his desk because he was moving around too much. Parents had to sign that it was okay for the nuns to paddle the students all the while having a framed sign that said, “This is a non violent school.”

My mother in law lives 5 minutes away. She is a dreadful human but when I go over, I’m damn near silent. One of my best friends had a child with my husbands little brother and their mom thinks we are so incredibly quiet and we’re not. I said aloud: Oh Ashley, grow up. She does talk about “religious trauma” and working with those people, which has prejudiced her and I do get that HOWEVER not everyone has religious trauma and going to mass with your husband will not make you a big phony. I agree! Catholicism is super magical! The incense and the ritualistic prayer alone is so similar to Wiccan practices.

When I was in 6th grade the social studies teacher put masking tape on my mouth for having the giggles. I saved the tape in my scrapbook. Years later I took my children to see my old junior high and that teacher was now the principal. I showed him the tape and he said if he tried that nowadays his ass would get fired so fast!

My dad was the youth/education pastor in my Southern Baptist church growing up, and I can tell you, I found the whole dinner invitation wild too. Because I was an only child, they often invited/expected me to come also, and I had no business wandering around strange homes of every church member over 50 trying to entertain myself while my dad “visited” or “ministered,” or “witnessed” or whatever the fuck their keep sweet language was at the time like 3-5 times a week.

Mattie - lifelong Catholic with parents who were super active in the church. We had priests over all the time. My mom threw a surprise 40th birthday party for my dad and someone had to drive the priest home because he got so drunk 🤣 My parents now live next door to a retired Catholic priest who is over their house all the time.
