It feels like there is a big difference between saying “I met Douglas and then Douglas died” and saying “I met Alliyah before she transitioned”. One makes it so clear that you prefer the “other version” of your partner and you think of them as two separate people. One affirms your partner and shows that you understand that Alliyah is always who your partner has been.

Me again.. my former sister in law (who is trans & lives in CA) had alot of the same issues Shawn and alliya are having. They did couples therapy and all that, and my sister supported her thru all of it, and they have since divorced but are still best friends. When I would visit I wouldn't use her dead name but I talked about when she was "Matt" and she didn't mind. But you definitely need to ask because everyone is different 🙂 its hard for ppl to understand
