Mattie is right about the sun thing btw. Idk what the fuck series he was thinking about 😂 BUT the entire perspective of East and South East Asian beauty is to be as pale as possible because it was previously associated with wealth. If you’re poor, you’re doing outdoor labor and are in the sun, if you’re fair skinned you have the privilege of being indoors, in the shade or having servants to provide shade. Obviously lots of that residual classism is still very prominent in Asian beauty standards, but thankfully now there are so many more accepted forms of beauty now than in the past. On the contrast, sometime during the Victorian era it became intriguing in Europe to be tanned because it implied you could travel to “exotic” places. It was during this era that global travel became accessible; travel marketing boomed because they were able to widely distribute photographs of far away places through catalogs, travel guides and magazines and to be seen as educated and desireable, you now had to be well-traveled and worldly. Of course you can see how both the Asian and European beauty perspectives are implicitly racist, classist and how they breed colorism in domestic and colonized cultures to this day.

I’m finally catching up on these episodes. I loved the passive aggressive move of changing the seating arrangement! And the guys are right, you don’t change your assigned seat! Although I had assigned seating at my wedding and we had a couple of guests change seats with other guests which caused a whole table of people from out of town. I had done the seating chart so that there would be locals at each table where there were out of town guests. I was glad I didn’t find out about the switch until after the wedding. It was just so rude! Ugh...
