I totally agreed with Ethan that everything with his mom is drama but I kind of got upset when he turned around because then they would be disappointing Isaac who was probably super excited to hang out with his brothers. Even though all of this is Mom's fault 😭

"I wondered why you said little children... that one freaked me out" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 That had me!

One thing that’s bugging me about Olivia, she keeps saying that she’s already compromising, but I really don’t think that she’s ready for a bigger city than Tallahassee yet. I think she’s SAYING she is to manipulate him to do exactly what she wants. Of course I think she’ll move to Tallahassee and eventually be ready to move on from there, but right now I think Tallahassee is her goal and she wants Ethan to come with her for comfort, but she’ll never admit that.

Seems so cruel for her to ever think he could be happy living in an apartment. 🙁

I think Olivia is much more immature than she thinks she is. She just has all the psychological vocabulary to make it seem like she’s mature. Ethan is really resenting her right now and it’s being directed at his parents instead of her. The whole packing up the house when it’s not even for sale yet and they don’t even have a place to go in Tallahassee is a huge passive aggressive move. She’s basically showing Ethan that she’s leaving and he can come or not. She doesn’t seem to be showing any emotion about their marriage and Ethan seems heartbroken because he can tell what she’s doing. He knows she doesn’t want to be married to him anymore. I really don’t like her and can kind of tell why his parents didn’t want him with her. Even though I think they are awful too, they weren’t wrong about Olivia.

Oh Poodle, I had the same reaction with Ethan’s butt perfection, he can landscape my yard anytime, oookkkkuuurr

To those sissies that think Olivia isn’t compromising, please understand that while Tallahassee is the capital of FL it is not a “big city” Tallahassee feels very small town. Miami is bigger city than Tallahassee. Olivia isn’t asking for much.Furthermore, Ethan only knows what he’s lived, Ethan has no idea what life outside a small town is like.

It wasn’t an “arranged marriage.” Ethan’s mom is so strict, they could only talk on the phone for an hr once a month, so they decided to marry to have the freedom to be in this relationship that Ethan’s mom was suffocating

I can understand not wanting to live in a city after looking at it objectively, but all Ethan knows is a small town and with everything going on with his parents - I think his fear of the city has less to do with a dislike of the elements of city living (and I’m using the term “city” loosely - Tallahassee is not much of a city) and more to do with fear of how he’s going to make it in a competitive environment where many people have knowledge and skills that he can’t really begin to compete with. Ethan can pay for a little house while wrenching on cars in Cairo and I think the thought of anything outside of that freaks him out. This may sound sexist, but I’ve found that this feeling of not being a successful earner is a huge, ginormous thing for men. A man who is not secure in his ability to earn a living can feel extremely depressed and I think that role of provider is really scary for him. I do believe that Olivia need to find a place that’s within a 45 min drive to a big city (which for most big cities is not far, it’s mainly traffic - Oakland to San Francisco is easily that amount of time in traffic) but I also believe Ethans attachment to Cairo is fear of making his way in the world. He says it’s his siblings, but he barely sees them now due to his parents and he’s not going to see them any more or less living in Tallahassee. He can visit once a month, which would be more frequent then he sees them now. Ethan needs a few years on his own, learning, growing and becoming his own person before he can be a good part for someone else. Olivia also has some growing up to do, but she does sound more like a typical 21 year old (somewhat indecisive, trying to be empathetic and not always succeeding, changing her mind and world views). I know she may SEEM more mature or worldly, but they grew up in similar ways and are the same age. Don’t expect more or better from her than him just because she seems better adjusted.

I think that because we see how terrible Kim and Barry are, we tend to forget that Olivia has a ton of trauma from her own fundie upbringing. Yes, she says they were less strict than the Plaths, but now we know that the Plaths behind closed doors are much more extreme than on the show, and women tend to get more shit and more control from fundamentalism than men. I don’t think there’s anything intentional there at all. I think she’s just trying to navigate the world and her trauma the best she can.

I agree. I think Olivia starts with compromise, and that’s what Tallahassee is. It’s the town Ethan works in… to say he can’t be happy there is a bit dramatic. Everyone changes, Ethan is just stuck right now. These are pretty easy compromises when you have a firm relationship foundation-but the Plaths have put so much doubt and insecurity into it. I’m sure Ethan questions if he had just chosen a different girl would he be happy with his family now? And Olivia probably wonders if she made Ethan choose her over his entire family, when it was really the stupid parents and now she’s trying to salvage her marriage with a very traumatized and depressed 23 year old.

Ms-Metal

We know exactly how they met and got together, it was all explained & it was def NOT arranged. Ethans parents were never Olivia fans & there was even drama on their wedding day, which Moriah discussed this season. Olivia WAS raised fundie! They met at a fundie event. This was all in the show. Rumor is Lydia's crush is Olivia's brother.

Watching Ethan turn around in the middle of the road when his mom said he had to pick Isaac up at the door broke my heart - such a trauma response ♡. I hope he's able to find a therapist, or group therapy, that he feels comfortable with.

I understand Ethan saying let’s get our marriage in a better place before moving but… I think Olivia feels like they need distance from what he knows for them to get to a healthier place. Idk marriage is hard

MJ

Such an interesting discussion of Olivia’s motivations. I think a lot of it was her living out her own anger at her parents by having Ethan leave his…sort of like how an anorexic will try to control their spouses eating (like Natalie). By Ethan being “freed” like she wants to it helps her enact that urge. I think she switches to seeing him as her parents sometimes too…and his wanting not to move reminds her of her parents’ control over her so she then needs to rebel against him. Matty mentioned Harville Hendrix once that’s all I can think about with them.
