It's really common for deaf children born to hearing families to be forced to read lips and attempt to speak vocally :( There's a lot of stigma like you guys said, and deaf kids get left behind in the language-learning process... Thank goodness David got the resources to learn ASL!

Future interpreter here: I have had several deaf ASL teachers whose parents didn’t learn ASL, ranging from older than David to millennial like myself. It’s still very common, unfortunately. Also Oklahoma School for the Deaf offers a free ASL online course a few times a year!! It’s self study and you go at your own pace but it’s so good. A great supplement to my classes.
