Who Da Boss Lady?
Chapter 32
-VB-
Venalita’s not been around for … quite a while now.
And that concerned Mari.
“What is she doing now…?” she muttered to herself as she flew around the city looking for her “mascot” and other ne’er-doers.
Like always, she flew around during the night because she knew better than to break the “immersion” of the normals. She didn’t want to be famous, because she knew that it was more trouble than it was worth.
‘I mean, look at all of the celebrities that all end up taking antidepressant, anti-anxiety, and all of the other drugs just to keep rolling!’ she huffed.
Which was why, she was going to make sure that in her debut and work with Serafall, she would be working with an alias and a facemask so no one recognized her!
It was foolproof!
… anyway, breaking the boundary between the regular world and the supernatural world was also a fast way for her to make enemies with everyone. And as strong as she was, she wasn’t that strong.
Not yet.
… But she wasn’t gonna go and do that even if she was strong! It wasn’t even what she wanted to do, and talking with dad told her enough about the supernatural world - and the regular world - to know that it was stupid. And she was not stupid!
Then she saw something.
On the street below, a man in robes suddenly pulled out a sword - was that a lightsaber…? - and barged into someone’s home.
Narrowing her eyes, she immediately dove down.
While she was the patrolling evil magical girl, there was no way she was going to let someone else become the supernatural evil guy!
(If she was going to be stuck with the ‘evil’ thing, then she was going to be the best goddamn evil!)
She landed on the ground softly and immediately jumped through the already destroyed door.
The moment she came through the destroyed door and into the main corridor of the house, she found him: a silver-haired man in robes with his sword - lightsaber?! - up in the air, ready to strike down the woman trembling below him.
She did what her dad taught her to do.
She did not give the enemy time to adapt or adjust.
Mari fired a trio of nameless magic missiles, sent more to stun than kill.
The man must have felt something because she whirled around, saw them coming at around the halfway point, and swung his sword. The blade blurred in a zig zag and all three of her magic missiles splattered and spluttered out of existence.
“Who the hell are you?” he snapped. “Are you a devil lover, too?!”
“Ew, no,” Mari sputtered with a grimace as she imagined herself sleeping with … basically any of the devils she learned about. All of whom were girls. She didn’t swing that way. Sleeping with her friends…? Ew. That’s not what friends were for!
That made the guy stop. “Then why the hell are you stopping me?” he asked, equally perplexed as she was.
Was he… killing that woman because she was a lover of a devil?
‘I mean, I’m for yuri but killing someone for yuri is kind of intense!’
“Killing regular people is still bad! If you want to kill devils, then you should be out there killing devils, not humans! Also, the supernatural should stay out of the regular world!” she yelled at him.
There! She gave him a reason to stop.
“... So?”
“What?”
Before she could do something about it, he whirled around and slashed.
There was a scream that abruptly cut off as the woman collapsed onto the floor.
Mari froze.
She stared at the bleeding woman and -.
She nearly threw up on the spot.
Wait, why did she feel that? Why was she panicking?! She killed and destroyed monsters before!
Then she saw him turn toward her.
Mari gritted her teeth. “I won’t let you kill anymore people.”
“Oh yeah?” he smirked at her. “The little kiddie in laces is gonna stop me?”
“Yeah!”
And before she realized it, he’d pulled out a gun and shot it.
She felt it.
Pinging off of her passive shield, something her dad had insisted she have when he found out she could do … a lot of things with her magic.
Her breath caught.
That had been aimed at her head!
He wanted to kill her! And dad’s advice saved her!
‘This guy is a certified psycho!’ she thought with a mental shriek.
She needed to put this to an end immediately.
So she did what she did with Serafall. She went all out.
Mari immediately cast more magic missiles but quickly layered it with a burst of “void” as Sera called it. The magic missiles almost shrieked when they gained that unnatural emptiness and shot towards him. The shriek turned into a constant staccato of hissing pops, and she instinctively realized what was happening from the way the flowing mana around was moving.
Whatever the void had done to the magic missiles, they were eating away at the air merely by touching. It was deleting matter, not even breaking them down to smaller parts. And as they passed, the “eaten” air became pockets of vacuums that collapsed.
And with each “pop,” even more matter got fed to the missiles.
And each time the missiles “ate,” they grew … hungrier? Like they got a taste and wanted more.
So by the time the other guy realized something was wrong, those magic missiles had gone from the same speed as her previous magic missiles into something closer to bullets.
But he must be someone with some fighting mastery, because he was still able to swing his sword.
Unlike before, however, the moment the lightsaber(!) touched her empty magic missiles, the missiles ate the sword, punching holes through where there was power, light, and structure.
The other guy didn’t imagine that happening, because he failed to dodge.
And she stood there, frozen, as a dozen eraser-sized holes appeared on the guy’s body.
He stood there for a second.
Then he stumbled forward.
“What…” he muttered out loud as blood spewed out of his holes for a brief moment. “The fuck … was that…?” he laughed painfully before he collapsed forward…
She stood there with her wand in front of her as the killer died after getting hit by her spells.
And a pool of blood grew underneath him.
She stared.
Mari stared.
And something swelled up inside of her and came up.
Her cheeks swelled instantly and everything came out in a torrent.
