Sailing the Skies with my Endergirl
Chapter 2: That Can’t Be Right
-VB-
Jeremy knew he wasn’t hallucinating.
Because if he was hallucinating, then his brother wouldn’t be looking at the screen with the same expression he had.
“Uh yeah. What the fuck?” Joseph, the youngest in the family, stared at his computer screen. He was about to record this but Jeremy had gotten him to stop; he did not want to deal with whatever possible problems this may lead to. Also, he could still be getting trolled, and making a video that seems like he believed in the gaslighting was going to be so embarrassing if it turned out to be true.
“What do you think?” he asked his brother.
“I think…” he began. “I never knew you to be one of those guys who love gun-totting ladies.”
“What?!” he whirled around in his chair to glare at his brother in shock.
“Really? There is a literal ‘Miss Militia’ standing in front of your character in red, white, blue, and camo with a gun that can be any kind of a gun. Like… If this is your taste, I can understand why you looked down on the popular high school girl when you were in school.”
Jeremy scowled. His little brother didn’t know but that girl had been … crazy. That craziness was what made her popular partially because filming her was a guaranteed view count. If it wasn’t the near nip slip when her tits bounced up and down, then it was the crazy cat fights where she won more than she lost. He prayed for Michael’s soul; the man does not understand that he was fatigued all of the time because he was riding that crazy chick.
Speaking of which, he wondered if they were still together. The nerdy jock and the popular, if crazy, girl high school sweet heart pair that everyone had bets on.
… he should focus back on this.
“This is a server I found myself in after going through a portal in my usual server,” he replied. “I have no idea what any of this is, why none of this looks like Minecraft even though I clearly am -,” he said as he toggled F5 to change the perspective, showing his demon skin avatar. “- still in my Mincrafter character. I placed blocks and tried to make a nether portal but it didn’t work.”
And now, he had his character follow the obviously roleplaying players to their headquarters as they requested.
“So what do you remember?” Miss Militia on the screen asked.
Jeremy glanced at her.
It had taken him a while but he now recognized where this server had taken its setting from.
Worm. Or the Parahumans series, if one counted all of the other books in the series like Wards and some other things like that series that was … a fiction inside the Worm setting or something?
But that was also even weirder for him because he knew about Worm mostly through fanfiction and whatnot (most of which he didn’t read because it just wasn’t his thing), so he knew the community enough to know that there was no way someone was rich or dedicated enough to pull off a server like this. Probably.
“Jesus Christ, they really are sticking to their roleplaying, aren’t they?” Joseph muttered.
“Right?” Jeremy sighed, exasperated by the antics of the people who clearly didn’t understand the situation.
Which included the new realization that his fucking computer was active despite having its power cord pulled out of the wall socket.
“Are they loredumping?” Joseph asked as he looked at the two “heroes” sitting across from Jeremy’s character inside the van that they called to have them all picked up to get the headquarters.
“Yeah, they are loredumping.” Then he let out a sigh. “I gotta get the computer disconnected from this server somehow. I have work to do. The company’s not gonna take this as an excuse to be late on the project.”
“Well, it’s still connected to the internet, right?”
“Yes?”
“Why not try to transition to like, I don’t know, a LAN server?”
“Tried it.”
“Well, try again.”
Jeremy gave his brother a deadpan stare before moving the mouse to click the red exit button found at the top right of almost every computer software and drill-pressed his mouse’s left button.
The cursor on the screen almost vibrated with how fast he clicked the mouse button, and the exit button also flashed quickly enough to give children epilepsy. But instead of exiting out of the game, the game just … chugged along.
Then he tried to exit to the main menu and the cursor did the vibrating clicks on the exit button as well.
And… nothing.
“Huh,” Joseph muttered.
“You think I didn’t try?”
“Well, sorry,” he said before yawning. “I’m just gonna go to sleep. Good luck, lol.”
And then he was gone, leaving Jeremy in his room.
The moment the door clicked close… his computer screen flickered.
His eyes snapped to it.
The screen went black and there was a single message with a yes and no options beneath it.
[Would you like to talk? -Integrity.]
Jeremy frowned.
Integrity was the end-game boss of the Broken Scripts mod.
… Was all of this some sort of an AI generated prank that the mod maker made?
“Sure, why the fuck not,” he drawled as he pressed yes.
Immediately, the screen changed to a minecraft dirt-block backgrounded chatroom.
---
[Integrity]: What a mess you found yourself in, huh?
[JeJeJe3]: is this AI? Or is the mod maker fucking with me?
[Integrity]: You think this is not real?
[JeJeJe3]: Worm is not a thing that crosses over into Minecraft. This has to be some kind of AI generated stuff.
[Integrity]: That attitude. So sure that this is some kind of a … prank. I like it. It makes you sound pathetic.
[JeJeJe3]: has to be the mod maker. Oi, joke’s over. Is this gonna be ransomware shit? It better not be. You know what happened to the last mod maker who tried this kind of shit.
[Integrity]: alas, he is still convinced that this is a prank. Allow me to be clear. This is not a prank.
[JeJeJe3]: so it’s ransomware.
[Integrity]: of a sort, though money is not something I am after. What I am after is what lies in that universe you know to be “Worm.”
[JeJeJe3]: look buddy, i don’t have time for this shit.
[Integrity]: But you do! You certainly wasted a lot of time on that server. A pathetic little creature doing meaningless pathetic things with so precious little time it has. It’s amusing.
[JeJeJe3]: canyou get to the part where you are making your demands?
[Integrity]: Allow me to explain the situation at least, you monkey.
[JeJeJe3]: fine.
[Integrity]: Everything you saw up to now is real. There is a body in a universe out there that almost nearly matches the universe of “Worm.” I specifically sent you there because I found you to be just right for the work I am about to have you do.
[JeJeJe3]: And that is…?
[Integrity]: Information. Specifically speaking, the more your avatar interacts with the parahumans of that universe, or Shards directly, the more I get to learn about that universe. All I ask … is that you play the game as if it is real life for you. Because it is for the people interacting with the shell of an avatar of yours. In return, I will reward you.
[JeJeJe3]: Reward me. How?
[Integrity]: Check your bank account, you monkey :3
---
“What?” Jeremy muttered before his phone pinged. He pulled it out and turned it on.
His eyes bulged when he saw that a thousand dollar had been sent to his bank account.
---
[JeJeJe3]: ok wtf
[Integrity]: Does that make the situation loud and clear for you, you balding monkey? This is real, I am real, your avatar truly is in a universe close enough to your Worm, and I want that information.
[JeJeJe3]: helping you sounds like a very idea if this is something you can do and you are real. You’re supposed to be a mod.
[Integrity]: “There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt in your Philosophy.”
[JeJeJe3]: oi don’t call me stupid.
[Integrity]: What else would I call a monkey but a monkey? Monkey. Balding monkey.
[JeJeJe3]: i am not balding.
[Integrity]: Keep telling yourself that. But if you don’t want money, then I can always find some other toy to work for me.
---
Jeremy glared at the screen. He leaned back quickly enough that his chair creaked back and forth.
That money was real.
He double-checked just now while chatting with … Integrity. He moved the money out of his previously nearly empty bank account to his bitcoin account, and the confirmation of a successful transfer came in minutes.
If this was real…
If money would keep flowing in…
---
[JeJeJe3]: fine. Let’s say i do it.
[Integrity]: Great! The monkey knows what’s good for him. All you have to do… is keep playing. I know how your pathetic self has no life outside of the game, so I’ll let you keep your mods, too. You can thank me. But for now, I bid you goodbye.
[Integirty]: I hope you won’t have died like a particularly dumb fish when I check up on you next time.
---
After that, the screen went back to his avatar inside of the … PRT van.
Was it really real?
Jeremy couldn’t shake off the feeling.
If it was real…
He groaned out loud.
‘This just got complicated,’ he muttered to himself.
“Are you okay?”
He looked at the screen and saw Miss Militia looking at him in concern.
“...Yes,” he replied through the mike. “I’m fine.”
“Are you sure? You were staring off into the distance.”
“I’m fine.”
How was he going to explain himself without sounding like a schizo?
He can’t, so he wasn’t going to.
He opened up a few softwares to test if the computer was working again, and it was.
He looked down and -.
The power cord.
It was plugged in.
Joseph and he didn’t do that.
He slowly got back up and sat down on the chair.
… shittttt.
That was one evidence, if flimsy one, that this was real.
Jeremy took a deep breath in.
“I guess I just got a part time job…?” he muttered to himself.
And that’s when something popped into the van next to him.
The two heroes across from him on the game screen jerked and Miss Militia turned her gun at something that had just teleported in.
It had sounded a lot like an enderman teleport.
He turned and looked -.
Oh.
Oh.
‘Please let this be real,’ he thought to himself when he saw the Endergirl sitting next to him. And he knew that this was his Endergirl because it had the very specific type of pet choker he put on his Endergirl in the multiplayer server.
Then he remembered what Integrity had messaged him.
I know how your pathetic self has no life outside of the game, so I’ll let you keep your mods, too.
She looked … real. Goth. Tall.
Surprisingly big tits.
He opened his mouth (in the real world[?]).
“Identify yourself!” Miss Militia demanded.
… Well, things just got a bit more complicated. And he wasn’t sure if he wanted Miss Militia to hurt his … girl.
“Miss Militia, let me explain…” he began.
