Sailing the Skies with my Endergirl
Chapter 8
-VB-
Jeremy was very tempted to drown the fucker.
“You fucking monster fucker! Get me out of this, you dipshit!”
Because as great as containing the villain was, the container in question did not render him mute.
So he was in there, constantly shouting and cussing.
It was getting annoying.
Worse, the PRT decided that since he was contained and he was already there to keep an eye on the cape, they were taking their sweet time.
“When I get out of here, I’m going to stab you in the asshole -!”
Really taking their sweet time. They were supposed to be here ten minutes ago.
Then he saw flashing lights above him. Or rather, light flickering on and off around him. He looked up and saw his still hovering airship with the PRT officer aboard. He was flashing his flashlight at him. Trying to get his attention?
“Can you keep guard over this … tomb?” he asked Catt, and she nodded.
Then he switched his armor back to elytra and took off with fireworks. It took him just one to fly up and over the ship and come gliding down slowly.
“What is it, officer?” Jeremy asked the man.
“The PRT has been engaged by the Merchants,” he told him with a grimace. “It’s why they haven’t come yet.”
“They did?” he frowned. “Is it this common to run into villains in the bay?”
“It is,” the officer looked resigned. “It’s why PRT often sends their challenging if promising greenhorns to us to humble them a bit.”
“So what did they tell you to tell me?”
“Console is asking you to stay here just in case the Empire sends their capes to free Alabaster.”
“... So sit around and wait for nothing.”
“Well, generally, they do send someone to reinforce the hero’s position, but with the Merchants taking up the bulk of the heroes on shift…”
Jeremy sighed, both in the chair he was sitting in in front of his computer and with his avatar.
He let his avatar sit down and wait.
And that was the plan. It wasn’t as if he had something better to do, like I don’t know, fly his airship?
At the same time, he did put in the work to contain Alabaster, and did not like the idea that someone might come and undo his work. In his professional life, that was an insult in and of itself, but it was something he ran into often enough. But unlike his “real” job as an accountant where he sat in a chair and went over frustrating paperwork, this was a Neo-Nazi nutjob that might escape if he bailed.
Which meant, morally speaking, he wasn’t going to, even if he emotionally wanted to fuck off and go do his own thing.
… He hated doing the right thing.
With a sigh, Jeremy moved away from the Minecraft screen and opened up his spreadsheet. If he was going to be waiting, then he may as well work on the next assignment.
---
It was eerie.
“Jeremy,” that was.
The man(?) just sat on the edge of his airship and … stared off into the distance.
And it wasn’t like he was swinging his legs or looking around. He had a thousand yard stare with none of the accompanying emotions that usually elicited such an expression.
He was so still that it scared James.
Seeing as the man wasn’t going to be moving, James just shrugged resignedly and sat down himself.
“Console, please be advised,” he spoke into his radio. “Jeremy, uh, is doing that blank staring thing he does before he sleeps.”
“What? Are you telling me that he’s about to fall asleep?!” Clockblocker’s voice came through. The boy sounded like he wanted to laugh.
And if James was watching this from the outside, then he might be.
But he wasn’t outside. He was on the inside with a very possible chance of the Empire sending more capes to rescue Alabaster… no matter how much the Empire’s own laughed at his “usefulness” (note the sarcasm).
He was the kind of Brute that the foam grenades were made for.
James was about to keep thinking about his situation when he heard a commotion below.
He peeked over the side of the airship, thinking that some of the civilians must have come out to gawk at the capes and the aftermath of the battle.
Instead, his eyes widened as he realized that he was looking at Stormtiger, Rune, and a dozen skinhead goons walking to Cattleya.
“Oh, shit,” he muttered to himself before he scrambled over to Jeremy. “Hey, Jeremy, your girlfriend is getting attacked!”
And for a terrible moment, James thought the man really did fall asleep.
But Jeremy jolted.
And then just dropped over the edge in a move that felt too similar to his initial dive against Alabaster.
His hand snatched to his radio and pressed down on the talk button.
“Console, Jeremy and Cattleya are engaging Stormtiger and Rune, over,” he reported frantically. “I repeat, Stormtiger and Rune have appeared at the scene with … eleven minions. They are seconds away from engaging Cattleya, if Jeremy doesn’t get to them first.”
“Uh, this is Console. Please unclip your vest camera and try to capture the interaction as best as you can, over.”
---
Five minutes.
He literally looked away for five fucking minutes.
Was this why Brockton Bay was called the cape capital of America? Just look away for a moment and boom, there were capes about to duke it out.
Logically, I understood that Brockton Bay was small compared to cities like New York City, Los Angeles, and Boston. But five minutes shouldn’t be the benchmark for capes FAFO’ing around the city!
He narrowed his eyes as he quickly dropped down.
Just three stories above the E88 contingent, he blasted away from them before harshly landing on his feet and changing out his elytra for his armor.
Stormtiger caught him maneuvering but he hadn’t been able to stop Jeremy.
Good.
Now, the E88 bunch was caught between him and Cattleya.
And no bullet or wind blade was catching his e-girl.
“We’re just here to pick up Alabaster, kiddos,” Stormtiger drawled. Was he trying to look cool and tough? “We know he shot at you first, so we aren’t gonna mess with you for that, but we’re not going to let him get carted off by the cops.”
“It’s hard to take that seriously when the pale idiot is still shouting like crazy about how he’s going to fuck us up,” Jeremy drawled right back. “I mean I was just going about my business flying in the sky when your boy started shooting at us. You do realize how that looks, right?”
Cattleya merely turned to look at the minions, and her eyes turned a baleful purple.
Huh, he didn’t know she could do that.
Oh, and her arms got a little longer, too.
Oh, yeah, she was now entering the uncanny valley territory.
The E88 minions and capes looked back and forth between him and Cattleya, unsure of what to do, especially since it did seem like Stormtiger was trying to solve this by talking.
“... Imma be honest,” Stormtiger spoke up suddenly without the drawl or the false bravado (or was it real?) he had before. “I have no idea why Alabaster was shooting at you. If anything, you should have been approached by someone else for recruitment. Not … whatever this was.”
“... So him being the pale idiot is actually a thing?”
Rune sighed.
Oof. That sigh was devastating.
And Alabaster was still howling.
“Unfortunately,” Jeremy replied slowly. “I’m not one to just let things go. If you want him, then you’ll have to fight both of us.” Then he paused. “Besides, it isn’t as if you lot aren’t going to break him out anyway. What’s the difference between now and a few days? Let the idiot stew in a cell for a few days. Maybe he’ll think twice before he shoots random people again.”
Stormtiger really looked like he was considering that.
But both of them knew that what Jeremy offered wasn’t an option. It would make the Empire look weak, and Kaiser hated looking weak.
“Sorry. We’re fighting,” Stormtiger replied as he brandished his clawed gauntlets. Then his placid face twisted into a snarl. “COME AND GET US!”
---
The new cape and his chick were monsters.
The girl couldn’t be hit by anything and her arms gave reach and strength no one had answers for.
And the armored guy was a battlefield monster.
Whatever armor he wore was plate armor that was thicker than anything Stormtiger had seen in his life. They were like what little kids might think knight armors were like: thick plates forming pauldrons, chestplates, and helmets.
And despite the fact that it must weigh in hundreds of pounds, he moved like a veteran pit fighter.
He bashed with his shield with an explosive burst of arm strength that made Stormtiger grimace.
He saw that purple-black blade slice through bats and guns with ease. When his minions got too close to the blade, the sword smoothly parted flesh and bones like they weren’t there.
There were some wasted movements here and there, but that cape was someone who knew how to fight.
“Rune, distract the bitch!” he shouted as he jumped to the rear of the group.
With a slash of his arm, wind screeched toward the armored cape.
The cape proceeded to side step Stormtiger’s attack, merely straightening and leaning away from the blades that went for the joints.
The sword suddenly disappeared.
And suddenly, there was an axe in its place.
Then he started running towards him.
Stormtiger immediately pulled up every single wave and flow of air around him and sent it blasting against the armored cape.
The cape halted as the wind buffeted against him. He leaned forward, but he wasn’t moving an inch.
There was no way they could rescue Alabaster against these two. It’s like fighting another version of Hookwolf and himself!
“Rune, get everyone out!”
“I can’t!” the girl shrieked.
Stormtiger looked over his shoulder and grimaced.
The Changer bitch was weaving in and out of all of Rune’s telekinetically flying rocks and disappearing whenever someone shot at her.
And then she would appear near someone and punch them so hard that they tumbled away like they got hit by a speeding car.
A Brute/Mover/Changer combo.
Fuck! That was basically Hookwolf!
And this guy -.
Crunch.
Stormtiger’s attention snapped back to the armored guy.
Because despite everything he was throwing at him, he was taking steps forward.
“... We need backup!” he shouted. “Call Kaiser!”
