Like many of you, I have my personal health protocol. I do not normally discuss it since it is not the focus of my channel, I am not a health professional and the protocol is unconventional and risky.

I do want to share however one thing which had immediate, lifechanging effects for me.  As the title shows - it's Magnesium Glycinate.

I never had any problems falling asleep. I sleep very few hours, but when I go to sleep - it's a matter of minutes before I fall asleep.  For my wife, however, falling asleep is a bit harder.

We supplement with Melatonin right before going to bed, but effects were minor.

A few months ago we switched our Magnesium supplement to Magnesium Glycinate - and the effects were unbelievably noticeable.

My wife falls asleep much easier now.  I fall asleep as quickly as before (no room to improve there) but whereas previously I rarely remembered dreams, now I very often do.  Apparently I get much more REM now, and I get much more from my sleep these days.

Since quality of sleep is important and I found this extremely effective, I thought you might want to know. If you try it, please let me know how it worked out for you.

I hope it helps!
Cheers,
CTD

PS - I also take a low dose of Magnesium L-Threonate, as it better passes the blood-brain barrier - but that's unrelated to sleep.

EDIT 2/17/24:

  • Removed affiliate links shortly after publishing. This post isn't about selling.
  • Turns out that Glycine can be obtained from food sources such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy, and legumes. It could very well be that supplementation is important for vegans but less so for carnivores.
  • Glycine is also available as a standalone supplement (for example https://iherb.com/search?kw=Glycine ) , but as noted above my only experience so far is with Magnesium Lysinate Glycinate.

Brands and Links

Below are links to the products which work for me, but similar products from other brands and stores could work just as well, so try from whichever brand and store work best for you. All links are regular (non-affiliate), I do not gain anything if you purchase.

Magnesium Glycinate: I actually use Magnesium Lysinate Glycinate (Doctor's Best, High Absorption Magnesium). I've contemplated using Magnesium BiGlycinate but since current ones work so well, I have no incentive to try anything new.

Melatonin: 3mg Melatonin is usually enough. I use MRM's 3mg capsules - inexpensive and I have excellent experience with some of this company's other products.

ChatGPT Summary on the benefits of Magnesium Supplement, specifically Magnesium Glycinate

Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in numerous bodily functions, and supplementation can provide several health benefits, especially for those who are deficient in this nutrient. Magnesium glycinate, a form of magnesium supplement, combines magnesium with glycine, an amino acid, making it one of the most bioavailable and absorbable forms of magnesium. Here are the benefits of magnesium supplementation in general, and magnesium glycinate specifically:

Benefits of Magnesium Supplementation:

  1. Muscle Health: Magnesium plays a critical role in muscle function, helping to relax muscles and prevent cramps and spasms.
  2. Bone Health: It contributes to the structural development of bones and is important for the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and the antioxidant glutathione.
  3. Cardiovascular Health: Magnesium helps maintain a healthy heart rhythm, supports normal blood pressure levels, and is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular diseases.
  4. Mood Regulation: It has a calming effect on the nervous system, making it beneficial in managing anxiety, stress, and depression.
  5. Blood Sugar Control: Magnesium helps regulate blood sugar levels, making it beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes or those at risk of developing it.
  6. Sleep Quality: Supplementation can improve sleep quality, particularly for those with insomnia, by regulating neurotransmitters and hormones that influence sleep cycles.

Specific Benefits of Magnesium Glycinate:

  1. Enhanced Absorption: The combination with glycine improves its absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, making it more effective in replenishing magnesium levels.
  2. Gentle on the Stomach: Magnesium glycinate is less likely to cause digestive issues, such as diarrhea, which can occur with other forms of magnesium supplements.
  3. Neurological Benefits: Glycine acts as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, providing a calming effect and potentially enhancing the mood-regulating benefits of magnesium.
  4. Sleep Improvement: The glycine component may also help improve sleep quality further, making magnesium glycinate a good choice for individuals struggling with sleep issues.

While magnesium supplements, including magnesium glycinate, offer various health benefits, it's important to use them appropriately. Over-supplementation can lead to adverse effects. It's advisable to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen, especially for individuals with kidney issues or those taking certain medications, as magnesium can interact with various drugs.

Cool! Glad it works well for you. I'm not vegan and was merely researching for supplements that may help to improve sleep quality and found this. I've never tried melatonin before. Maybe I can try the next time I replenish my stocks. Thanks!
