If this is the Matrix, the original pizza place personnel were probably programs who were preparing for exile or reassignment, the 'construction of the new branch' being the process of 'in game remodelling' by which they would facilitate their exit. And after this exit was achieved, everything just fades from existence as if it never really was there, replaced by ersatz copies of what once was (so as to fill the vacuum, nature abhors a vacuum) and living on only in the confused memories of our narrator and their spouse. Yes, you can probably tell I'm perhaps a bit too steeped in Matrix lore. 😂 But look, whatever's really happening here, it's definitely given us one hell of a story to chew over, ponder and dissect.
