What I find very intriguing is that Lake Tahoe has a tradition of strange underwater inhabitants that pre-dates the Tessie sightings and goes all the way back to Native American days of yore. Granted, these ancient legends describe creatures that are supernatural rather than flesh and blood and are quite different from Tessie (water spirits), but you can't help but wonder if there is a link of some kind between the two. And it's funny how the sturgeon has become a potential explanation for both Tessie and her Scottish pal all the way over in Loch Ness. Certainly Adrian Shine, the naturalist who heads the Loch Ness Project, is in favour of that particular candidate. (Hilarious story: apparently the guy once raised his own sturgeon with the intention of surreptitiously releasing them into Loch Ness once they got big enough, and 'solving' the mystery of Nessie by publicly recapturing them.) Shenanigans aside, I can't completely fault his logic since those things can grow to more than twelve feet in length and weigh several hundred pounds, although I personally think they're only responsible for SOME sightings and not all of them. My headcanon is that the old Native American water spirits can shapeshift, and have occasionally adopted an aquatic serpent-like form to scare human interlopers, which gave rise to the Tessie myth. But that's of course just me, and I guess ultimately Tessie and her ilk are whatever you want them to be lol. Love lake monster legends so much.
