"North of Metrol lies a secret underground facility, once run by House Vadalis. There, in the tailing decades of the Last War, the heirs of the Mark of Handling were experimenting with ways to compete with House Cannith’s warforged. In order to match the constructed soldiers, House Vadalis aimed created the perfect breed of warrior. The program itself was top-secret and the brainchild of one visionary, deranged Vadalis heir, who developed innovative magebreeding techniques involving the application of alchemical mutagens.These mutagens would augment the test subjects to be stronger warriors, more cunning leaders, and grant them magical abilities above and beyond common humans. The hope was to imbue these mutations so deep in the test subjects that they would become hereditary, creating a new breed of superior soldier. By 994, House Vadalis had perfected the process on a test group of magebred humans, mutated in infancy and raised to adulthood in just under a decade. Unfortunately for the unethical Vadalis handlers, the magebreeding processes they developed for use on humans were not flawless. Along with enhanced physical and mental capabilities, the treatments invariably resulted in a tendency toward egotism and a distinct lack of empathy.When the Day of Mourning occurred, the magebreeding facility was plunged into chaos. Deep underground as they were, the corrupting energies of the Day of Mourning passed the facility’s inhabitants over, but earthquakes from the upheaval rocked enclave. During the chaos, the magebred humans rebelled against their Vadalis handlers, killing most and enslaving the rest—believing that all non-magebred humanoids were lesser beings. When the havoc subsided, the magebred reached the surface to find the world in ruin.The charismatic magebred woman Donata was the architect of their rebellion. She acted quickly to enslave the surviving Vadalis handlers and cement her rulership over the rest of her kind. Currently, “Empress” Donata has ordered the expansion of the underground facility into a tiny domain, seeking to connect it to the ruin of Metrol to the south. She has currently claimed the royal palace as her own, and seeks to amass an army of slavishly loyal soldiers to expand her burgeoning empire.Empress Donata, while possessed of the same endowments that enhance all magebred human physical strength and endurance, was given additional alchemical treatments specifically to be a leader. Vadalis’s intention for the particular strain of magebreeding that culminated in Empress Donata was to create battlefield commanders whose orders could not be denied, even in the heat of battle. Unfortunately for the Vadalis handlers, Donata’s enhancements far outstripped their original intentions, and her words can magically compel even those hostile to her in the midst of combat.When Donata seized control, she singled out the other test subjects that had been given the “leadership mutagen” and summarily executed them, ensuring that her magical voice was the only one directing the future of her people."
