Could he be talking to Chabot? Or someone from his publiahing company. This could be part of that arc that makes Martin be more embracive of adventure.

Awh, poor Martin! 🥺 I'm now really curious to know who said that though, and what the situation is. It definitely wasn't Steban, and I have a feeling it wasn't any of our protagonists. Hmmm, from reading this, I think Martin is most likely talking to Chabot. But that’s just my guess

Maybe Margaret is saying this to him, just my guess. A part of No North is Martin's journey as well; perhaps to enrich his writing is to not just look at one lane, like what Chabolt says. He will be going through lots of experiences, which is another way to enrich writing.
