AYEEEE MATES

How have you all been??

SO here's something a bit different to shake things up in the middle of the week!

Last week I took the chance to do something I've wanted to do ever since I was a kid: sailing a tall ship!

And it was an absolute ADVENTURE! Just me, one german girl and 45 dutch people!

I made a little video to share a bit of our journey!

We were divided into 3 "teams" so that the Eendracht could sail 24h per day - so, many night shifts covered by stars! A lot of work in the kitchen and serving the tables as well (I've gotten quite good at keeping my balance with a tray full of ice cream bowls while 6 meter waves hit the ship).

We saw dolphins, a whale, sunsets and sunrises like no others, and we were even caught by a storm in the middle of the open sea. Tied up to the ship so we wouldn't fall into the pitch black  raging ocean, I made sure I took every second in.

Maybe mostly because of language barriers, I messed up a few times (like the time I held a line and was pulled up, taking flight on deck for a second xD), but I learned a LOT! I have SO many stories from these intense 6 days of sailing, I've met so many amazing people onboard and made so many friends! In the end, I could only say that I'd do it all over again!

Naturally, I also drew and made up scenarios in my head during my free time - can you imagine how it would be if Steban, Martin and Delilah sailed the seas with Rupesh and his crew?

Something tells me Delilah would be super into it and would really get along with Freckles. Martin would start the journey unnerved and reluctant... But I feel like once he understood how the ship works, he'd start loving that horizon!

And Steban - well, he'd be so excited at first, but he'd probably mess up a lot (even though he'd really try!) and It wouldn't take long for him to be walking the plank xD

How about you?? I know some of you have a lot of experience with the sea and I'd love to hear your tales!

And what do you think would happen if the world of No North met Darktide? xD

Love it! The look on the pug's face like, "help" and "how did I get here" is priceless!

I love it Skailla 💖 ⚓

Ooooooh this is such a unique idea for No North characters 💖💖 Also what a wonderful adventure you experienced! This is such a great piece of art, I love the details on the ship and the ocean 💙 your work always satisfies! Makes me want to go sailing someday. I wonder what Captain Jack Sparrow would look like if he was drawn as a canine character.. 😄

Whoah that's epic! Congrats on getting your sea legs.

Getting outside your comfort zone and trying something new like that is quite inspiring. I need to be more open to experiences!! That’s awesome! Also I love ships sooooo much :D

I love this! I have been out on Lake Superior, but never in the ocean or on a sail boat. While I do have a fear of deep waters, I really enjoyed myself out there. I am glad you are able to have great adventures while living in Portugal! It's on my bucket list to visit one day...

Wow Skailla, sounds like you had quite an adventure! Six days at sea on a sailing ship! This sounds absolutely incredible, and romantic too. I can only imagine what it was like to live such an awesome experience! I've never been to sea myself, and I've only ever seen the ocean just a handful of times in my life. But even just looking at it from the coast it seems like a wonderous and captivating world unto itself. Many years ago, my family and I took a trip up to Oregon, and we stayed at a hotel in a little seaside town called Newport. The room had a view of the beach, and I remember standing in front of the window early one foggy morning, just gazing out at the gray haze that hung over the waves, watching the beam of a distant lighthouse cut through the mist. The only sounds I could hear were the gentle crashing of the waves and the occasional cackling of gulls, and I remember just feeling so lost in that moment and so at peace, staring out at that magnificent view of the Pacific. I don't quite know how to describe that feeling, but it was really something! It was like the rest of the world briefly faded away and it was just me and that time and place. I can't imagine how much that feeling might be amplified if I was standing on the deck of a ship out on the open sea! That's definitely a bucket list item that I hope to fulfill someday. And maybe I'd get to see whales and dolphins too! This is really such a magnificent world we live in, but with all the difficulties of life and the bad things that happen, it's easy to lose sight of that. Sometimes you need to slow down and take some time to open your eyes and appreciate that grandeur that's hidden in plain sight around us. Also, I don't think I've ever mentioned this before, but there was actually a time when I considered joining the merchant marine, but sadly I couldn't make that materialize. But as I've gotten older, I find I've developed a certain taste for adventure. There's so much I want to do and see! And of course, I just love this piece so much! I can't wait to get home today and add it to my Skailla art folder! Steban being his typical self 😁 I'm sure he'd be a real handful aboard ship! I agree, I think they would make him walk the plank 🤣 And I also look forward to seeing more of Rupesh and his crew in the future! I just know there's a whole other story there, just waiting to be told! ✨

I’m so happy you got to sail such a magnificent ship! Sailing is such a unique experience. I spent most of college racing sailboats and it was such a rewarding endeavor. My senior summer we did a 5 day race from Maryland to Bermuda… in the wake of a hurricane XD Definitely have some cool pictures from that trip I’ll have to share sometime.

An experience to have at least once in your life

That’s so epic! I’ve always wanted to do something on the high seas! There’s just a sense of freedom you get when there’s nothing between you but the sea and sky. I remember one time when I was little, we went to San Francisco. One of the first things we did when arrived was that we rode a ferry from the San Francisco Ferry Center into the city. When I was on the boat, and I saw the harbor looming before me, I felt a wild sense of awe, excitement, and wonder. Just seeing the enormous buildings, the sea crash on the huge pier rocks and the clouds in the backdrop made me feel like I was one of the immigrants on Ellis Island coming to America for the first time! I also recall the sea glimmering beautifully in the sunlight, like sapphire. I don’t think I’ve ever seen water deeper blue than on the Pacific! It was an absolute blast. XD

That’s awesome Skailla! Sounds like you have had a real awesome adventures on the high seas. Wow that sounds absolutely amazing seeing all those incredible marine animals and I could imagine the sunsets and and sunrise as well. Also love this concept art as well. I honestly can’t stop laughing at the pugs facial expression absolutely spot on.
