The Zanpakuto spirits are extensions of the user's soul if that helps you understand it better. While they may be extensions, as you saw in this episode, if a user has any weaknesses, personal hangups, or outright ignore the sword spirit, it can cause friction between the two and it will decrease their effectiveness. Kenpachi was an early favorite character of mine. I just love that he is such a big battle junkie that has to handicap the hell out of himself to even get a thrill anymore because he is that strong. He isn't even interested in winning, he just wants that adrenaline rush haha.
