What I like about S2 is that it’s really not about winning if you think about it

And after nearly a month of hell at work I am back! Alright, what are our little horsies up to? Oh yeah, feels. Episode 7 opens up to McQueen's comeback win at the Osaka Hai in 1993. While Nice Nature placed second, it was not even close. McQueen cleared the competition by five lengths despite the eleven months since her/his injury. Ikuno Dictus placed 6th. Oh yeah, and at this point everyone in the main cast is a super-senior. Rice Shower meanwhile is the plucky young'un aiming to unseat her elders. That said, the episode briefly mentions her loss to her contemporary Matikanetannhauser in the G2 Meguro Kinen. Her win in another spring G2 leading up to the Tenno Sho, the Nikkei Sho, goes unmentioned. The '93 Spring Tenno Sho! Absolutely iconic. Mejiro McQueen carried the shield for two years running, but the Black Assassin struck again! Despite Rice Shower specifically stating how much the booing hurt, the audience is presented as just disappointed with only some muttering. Irl, there was very audible booing and jeering. Part of the outrage was gambling related of course, but another part was local pride. Rice Shower was seen as an invader from the capital area in the Kanto region of Japan, while both the Kikuka Sho and Tenno Sho took place in Kyoto in the Kansai region. Meanwhile both Bourbon and McQueen were well-loved in Kansai. It felt to many like they'd watched their favorite sports team lose the homecoming match. Anyway, race records. Rice Shower won a record time, both for the Tenno Sho and for the Kyoto 3,200 meter track in general. Mejiro McQueen not only was denied a 3rd consecutive Spring Tenno Sho victory, but his jockey the ubiquitous Yutaka Take, was denied his 5th consecutive win of the race. They placed 2nd. Mejiro Palmer was not able to keep the lead for the entire grueling 1.5 miles, but still placed a very respectable 3rd. 4th place went to Matikanetannhauser, who trailed a whole six lengths behind Palmer. Ikuno Dictus was also in the race, getting 9th. In Episode 9 we get some more BNW. That is, Biwa Hayahide, Narita Taishin, and Winning Ticket. These three up-and-comers have been mentioned here and there, including Narita Taishin's victory at the Satsuki Sho last episode. While the past two years had a singular classics champion who seemed unstoppable but was unable to get the third crown, the '93 classics were dominated by three horses who competed neck-and-neck and each won one of the crowns. BNW could easily have an anime of their own, but they at least get the spotlight in the S1 OVA and mentions here in S2. Next up Ikuno Dictus gets a close 2nd at the G1 mile race Yasuda Kinen. She was defeated by Yamanin Zephyr, who was not part of Umamusume at the time but is now. Another uma, Nishino Flower, was the favorite to win, but placed 10th. And then Tokai Teio suffered a third fracture. Those hyper-flexible ankles that gave him such incredible maneuverability and his distinct "Teio Step" were also a fracture-point, and it was clear at this point that even if each of the fractures he'd suffered were pretty minor, chronic injuries were pretty much a guarantee at this point. Yet another dream broken... But life goes on, and the Takarazuka Kinen went off without Teio. McQueen won of course, but there was certainly still tough competition. Mejiro Palmer was 2nd favored to win, but despite the much shorter course than the Tenno Sho, lost steam quickly and came second-to-last in 20th place. Nishino Flower too despite maintaining 2nd place until the last corner burned out and fell into 8th. Ikuno Dictus however defied expectations and accelerated at incredible speed going from 9th to 2nd in the final stretch. But she was once again no match for McQueen.
