THE MIRACLE RUN 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Best season hands down. And I swear this isn’t cope: I am 99% sure they made the Teio McQueen relationship as gay as they could get away with. They did literally everything short of actually saying it, even had a confession scene. And the Uma writers have genuinely gotten in trouble for making stuff too gay in the past.

Season 2 finale!!! But before we get there we have Episode 10. We get right into the melancholy with Teio deciding to withdraw from the academy. But then Twin Turbo cranks up the mood with a solid win at the G3 Tanbata Sho! It's her fourth win in her career. While she's certainly not a Grade-1 uma and appears like more of a joke compared to the elites she's surrounded by, Double Jet is still much better than your average race horse. Most never manage to win a graded race, or even qualify to run in one. And before the true Miracle Run we have Twin Turbo's Miracle Run. Despite burning out at the last stretch, her lead was so huge that she still managed to finish ahead by five lengths! Literally ever other horse ran the last stretch several seconds faster than Twin Turbo, but even Rice Shower, who probably started his sprint too late, was not able to catch up in time. The Sankei All Comers is the only G2 or higher race Twin Turbo won, but it is a significant one, being a trial race for the elite autumn G1s, so it tends to be full of top competitors. I Really love how much everyone cares for Teio and want her to succeed. Gold Ship dedicating all her energy and attention span to make the send-off performance the best she can. Team Canopus committing crimes to ensure Teio sees Twin Turbo's run (poor Meisho Doto getting kidnapped). But most of all Symboli Rudolph setting aside her stern countenance for the moment and allowing the program to be derailed because she so badly wants to see her protégée (son) race one more time. Episode 11: sweet, sweet yuri bait.

Episode 12 starts with the '93 Kikuka Sho. Biwa Hayahide had placed 2nd in both of the earlier classic crowns, but this time her power as a stayer allowed him to destroy the competition in the much longer Kikuka Sho, breaking Rice Shower's record set the previous year. Winning Ticket placed 3rd, but 2nd was taken by Stage Champ, not Narita Taishin. Taishin was not built for long races and despite still being the 3rd favorite, ended in 17th place. The Kyoto Daishoten is also mentioned, which actually took place before the Halloween date. McQueen won this major G2 with her usual ease. Palmer was also there, but sadly placed 9th. Even more tragically of course, this would be Mejiro McQueen's last race. Suspensory Ligament Desmitis is just as brutal as portrayed in the anime. While a horse afflicted with SLD caught early enough can still live a perfectly fine life at pasture without too much pain, the more the horse exerts the diseased tendon, the worse it gets. Even casual running is dangerous, and racing is out of the question. Very few horses that get SLD ever fully recover, and McQueen was not one of those lucky ones. McQueen was diagnosed just four days before the Autumn Tenno Sho, and was retired soon after dropping out of the race. Still, while his impressive racing career was cut short, he enjoyed his time as a breeding stallion where he developed particular interest in Ikuno Dictus, and also became friends with Sunday Silence, and was a calming influence to the rambunctious American stallion. And now for the grand finale! It was truly a miracle that Tokai Teio was not just able to compete, but win the Arima Kinen, a whole year since she suffered an 11th place defeat followed by two fractures. Most of her fans were just happy to see Teio run again and weren't expecting him to even place on the board. Biwa Hayahide had never placed less than 2nd at this point and although Teio managed his miraculous from behind victory, Hayahide still clutched 2nd place. Nice Nature, the Bronze Collector, placed 3rd in the Arima Kinen for the third time in a row. Matikanetannhauser was at the back of the pack for nearly the entire race but surged forward to place 4th, Mejiro Palmer fell into 6th, Rice Shower finished 8th, and Winning Ticket suffered a surprising 11th place defeat. Additionally there were beasts in the race that are not Umamusume, such as Japan Cup winner Legacy World who placed 5th, and Vega who placed 9th. And at the end, we see both Tokai Teio and Mejiro McQueen, healed and ready to finally run together once again. Neither of them ever raced again irl. McQueen would never recover and Teio's staff decided it was best to end his career after the Miracle Run rather than risk a fourth fracture or worse by continuing to have him race. But in the miraculous world of Umamausume they would have their chance again despite the real life record. While I think both the Beginning of a New Era movie and Cinderella Grey are overall superior to any season of Pretty Derby, S2's last arc is so well done. An absolute tearjerker oscillating between crushing despair and the brightest hope for the future. Season 2 is a delightful experience and no sports anime is quite like it.
