whimsy

season 3 has some of my favorite stupid little bits like Sounds of Earths fake violin

Ah, S1 episode 13. A love letter to the horses and their fans at a time when it was unknown whether there would even be any more Umamusume after it. So it kinda spoils S2. Overall it shouldn't been taken seriously, but I will try to force it into the chronology anyway. So the race clearly occurs after both S1 and S2, and thus must happen during or after S3. The girl trainer uh, "meets" in the concert is a proto design for Kitasan Black, but we'll pretend she's someone else entirely since she's not named at things wouldn't work otherwise. Kitasan is also not in the race, so we can assume it takes place before the end of S3 as well. There are a couple other S3 events that further narrow down when this takes place, but that might still be spoilers for you, so we'll just leave it as "somewhere in the years that S3 takes place in." Next we get some context from some races mentioned. Spe-chan runs her last canonical race against Grass Wonder in the '99 Arima Kinen. An abbreviated summary of Teio's and McQueen's careers further cements this as taking place after the end of S2. The Arima Kinen Narita Brian and Hishi Amazon argue over was irl the grand prix in the very next year after Teio's Miracle Run, 1994. Since there's no room for this race to happen in a previous year within the anime timeline, I think it's safe to allow continuity here, meaning this episode happens at least a full year after S2. Next, Scarlet and Vodka argue over who won more races against each other. All but the last of these took place in 2007, but seeing as the two mares are presented as Spe-chan's underclassmen and we see their debut races, the three classic races they competed against each other in must happen in the second year of S1, aka anime 1999. It's really quite the pity all of the races in their intense rivalry were skipped over entirely. The fourth race they mention was the 2008 Autumn Tenno Sho. Since this was in their senior year, it must have taken place during the first year of S2, which is Teio's 1991, or the anime chronology's 2000. Confused yet? We also hear of a couple of Golshi's races. They both happened in 2014 irl, including Golshi's second consecutive win at the Takarazuka Kinen, and her disastrous "vacation to France" where she places 14th in the Prix de l'Arc. Gold Ship's placement in the timeline is very odd. The first race we see her run was the 2013 Hanshin Daishoten in S1E3, and when we next see her race in S1E10, she's running in the 2011 Cosmos Sho?! The Diashoten makes sense because that makes Golshi a senior at that time, the same age as Suzuka. This kinda needs to be the case since she's the most veteran member of Team Spica. So ignoring the Cosmos Sho, the two 2014 races happen in the anime's 2000, aka the start of S2. I think this lines up chronologically with Golshi's upcoming races in S3, but we'll get back to that when it happens. Going back to Narita Brian's Arima Kinen. She won and Hishi Amazon placed 2nd. They're not the only anime characters in that race however. Rice Shower placed 3rd, and Nice Nature placed 5th, breaking her "3rd place curse" on her fourth attempt at the Arima Kinen, though not in the way she had hoped. Twin Turbo also got a second chance at the G1 race, and ended dead last. Matikanetannhauser was supposed to race but had to drop out due to a bad nosebleed. Alright, does the timeline make sense now? No? Don't worry it, never will, but I will revisit this bonus episode and it's placement at a later date after a certain point in Season 3.

Oh yeah, S3 starts now too. Kitasan Black ran in three races prior to the Satsuki Sho and won all of them, but was not ready for the competition of G1 racing, getting 3rd at the Satsuki Sho and a devastating 14th at the Derby. Duramente was an absolutely monster for sure, but Kitasan Black was going to lose those races anyway unfortunately. Nice Nature has an even bigger role in S3 than she did in S2, which makes this season the best one of the bunch. Jokes aside, Kitasan can't confide in her idol, Tokai Teio, so keeping Nice Nature in to act as a therapist of sorts to Kitasan is a great touch. We skip over all of summer and the G2 St.Lite Kinen, which Kitasan Black needed to win to qualify for the Kikuka Sho. And Kitasan won both of those races, showing the fruits of the endurance training they went through in preparation for the 3,000 meter race. We raced through like six months in just one episode, but E3 remains entirely in November of 2015. We see Satono Diamond win her first two races, and we watch Golshi lose her final two races. All Haiyu (Gold Actor) won the Arima Kinen, with one of my favorite supporting characters Sounds of Earth placing 2nd. Kitasan Black only got 3rd, but that is still very impressive for a classic year uma who lacks the experience of the seniors like Gold Ship. Speaking of which, Gold Ship raced for six years, twice as long as most horses, and got six G1 wins, something very few ever accomplish. At this time, seven is the most G1s any uma has ever won. Irl Gold Ship was likely fully capable of winning his last race, but didn't have enough interest. Not long into retirement he was beating record times when running just for fun. His refusal to enter the gate to the point that the staff had to blindfold him is another sign he was just not into it that day. So I didn't realize Gold Ship's last run was so early, but this is another reason why I believe the S1E13 Dream Trophy race takes place later into S3. We don't see a single other uma from Team Spica run in any more races, and even Suzuka has returned from her time in America so I think it's safe to say that all of them other than Gold Ship had retired by the start of this season. Both Teio and McQueen regained their ability to run, but it makes sense they immediately moved on to the Dream Trophy so they don't push themselves too hard, and the others are just older and have finished what they wanted to accomplish in the Twinkle Series. Goldship was still seeking that 7th G1 and so has stuck around past her prime, until now. I think it's worth noting that the letter was one she received, not wrote herself. The URA invited her to the Dream Series (aka asked her to retire already). All of Golshi's rivals had already moved on by that point too. So no one else in Team Spica is shocked by Golshi's last run since they've all moved on already. but for the newbie Kitasan it's a huge shock. There is one big problem though, I have realized. The current chronology works with the races Gold Ship has run in, aside from a single minor race that was literally just a single still frame, but Narita Brian's first Arima Kinen should also be happening this year, so that's a problem. I will have to adjust my timeline somehow. As always, don't be like me. Don't sweat the continuity. It's not worth it.
