this "arc" is probably the weakest thing about SAO (personally, of course), it really feels like pure filler BUT they really are novels, the most short of them, even the novel wasn't that great but after this saga is where things REALLY go all up, still this "arc" is pretty short, just some chapters and the most MMO thing in the anime from a gamers perspective so if you see it from those eyes is actually very good. also, I don't know if the anime says it (I think it doesn't, it isn't a spoiler as since the start of the season he had the new model but more of a fun fact) Kirito changed his avatar because (1) his other avatar was fking busted to the moon (remember it was bugged with his information from SAO giving him stupidly high stats and skills AND the admin access of Kayaba) and (2) being much more important, Yui wanted to sit on his head as a pixie but his sparky hair didn't let her which made her sad so he instantly reset his account for her.

also this arc is like a combination of norse myths with artorian legends too combined into one. I personally LOVE this side of MMO when a world quest suddenly becomes something that takes over the whole server, like when in Asheron's call a whole server war started for literal months because while people had to supposedly defend the world from this demon that wanted to destry the world, a guild decided to protect it and to serve under it and suddenly the fight became multi-server wide with the GMs having to ask players to fight in this war becoming a stupidly huge event, it was incredibly epic and are things that can only happen in MMOs because of players quirks.

SO happy to see you onto the next arc. I actually love Calibur for just what you said. This arc really calls back to older multiplayer gaming. Sadly, I was never able to play "the game" that eveyone else was on, or I just coldn't do online stuff. I grew up a single-player campaign person. Zelda, Morrowind, Sonic the Hedgehog. Mega Man. I was actually pretty envious of folks who could play online with friends, and of people who could get into the original RPGs, like Final Fantasy and the such. I do NOT enjoy turn-based gaming, besides Civilization(which is worse than meth for me). Now, RPGs are a whole different beast, yet I have no experience with them. My online gaming with other people boils down to like 10 minutes of playing EVE Online, playing Diablo 3 with a coworker and our local liquor store's cashier, and then my binge-playing League of Legends after my divorce. So, seeing Kirito and the crew seek out this mystical weapon both titilates my yearning for long-term gaming with other people and stirs my sorrow for missing out on growing up without RPGs.

Yeah, Kirito reminds Leafa that he reset his character after saving Asuna. He really would have been smurfing with that character!

I love what you said about the OST!!! Yesterday, I just happened to see an old video game cover that reminded me of my first ever CD- The Secret of Evermore Soundtrack. This plays into my other comment about never getting into those party-type RPG games, but I was mystified, enchanted, and seduced by the music of that game!!! The CD cover had a picture of a man's face for the top half and a dog's snout, teeth, and neck for the bottom half. It looked so edgy and powerful. But the music.... I immediately found the album on YouTube and started browsing thru the tracks, and I froze in place...just waving my hands like a 9 year old playing conductor, bouncing with every beat and piano run. Every note of every song on that album is still engraved on my soul. All instrumental, of course, for a 90's game, and so very, very immersive and beautiful. It was Jeremy Soule's(the Elder Scrolls music dude!) first big work, and I've been a huge fan of his ever since. You can feel his brilliance in both The Secret of Evermore and Skyrim, all just as potent and ethereal.

Btw, after Kirito tugged on Sinon's tail, an extremely intimate act, you can see Silica holding her tail, probably thinking of him pulling her tail. :P It's funny how the SAO harem works. Everyone knows that Kirito and Asuna are pretty much a soul-bound, ride or die, fight the powers-that-be couple, but I'm pretty sure none of the girls ever stop being very attracted to him. They just don't make it weird or stupid, like so many, many other anime series.

19:00 See?!?! Here, we get to the really fun, fantastical WTF of SAO! Urd, an NPC, shows up requesting a messiah quest that would counter the hunting quest that is happening on the ground, and Yui is befuddled about who this chick is or how she actually works! Everything Urd tells out plucky heroes is so detailed and sorrowful. Talk about a quest that you could feel personally inspired to finish! What I love most is how this quest is basically to stop the apocalypse of the world this game is happening in, and only our Black Swordsman and his merry band know what is at stake. The idea that them failing here affects ALL people who play this game is just so damn epic!!!

No, Asuna was kept caged in the branches of Yggdrasil, not at the peak. Also, the ALFheim was basically a different world. This ALFHeim is one created using the Seed, a copy of the game Asuna was trapped in. Considering that predator who had her imprisoned had the main quest end at a door that wasn't supposed to even open, I doubt there was anything meaningful up where Asuna was held. So...the original World Tree was just a mad scientist's creepy lab and was intended to be his freaky brainwashing sex cave eventually.

As far as I know, the only "non-canon" anime original part of SAO was the Ordinal Scale movie. Then...the next season canonized the movie. So, while the movie wasn't in the series novel run, it is canon to the anime series. And, hot damn, I am beyond hyped for you to watch the movie!!!!! It's one of my most adored arcs of SAO. Done REALLY damn well. Gorgeous af visuals, spectacular music, and a very, very macabre, deep reaching story. Calibur is in the anime right where it was in the books. :) I'm glad you seem like you'll enjoy this.
