"It's 2026" Ha! Try 2006. Don't expect to see any smart phones in this anime. Or cell phones in general. Even the police detective had to contact Keiichi via a pay phone. Argh, there's so many little things I want to point out, but I shall refrain. ...Mostly. I guess a basic glossary would be okay and helpful? There's a lot of weird names and terms that get thrown around with little explanation. Let me know if you like the reminder, or rather trust in your own fallible memory like God intended. Hinamizawa: a small and quiet village the likes of which can be found anywhere... or is it harboring a terrible dark secret? Apparently a dam project was set to submerge the entire village but was eventually cancelled. Okinomiya: a rural town near Hinamizawa. Hinamizawa is within the Okinomiya City PD's jurisdiction. Watanagashi: the cotton-drifting festival. Old bedding is ceremonially torn apart and the people float the chunks of cotton down the stream to wash away their sins, apparently. Oyashiro-sama: the purported guardian deity of Hinamizawa. Some villagers appear to believe that Oyashiro-sama laid a dreadful curse on the enemies of the village that claims lives on the eve of Watanagashi every year... Maebara Keiichi: our protagonist. Appears to have transferred to Hinamizawa about a month ago. Has parents. About 16 years old. Ryuuguu Rena: the cutesy girl-next-door. Has an obsession for odd things like Colonel Sanders. Claims to have transferred to Hinamizawa last year. Claims there were no murders. About 15 years old. Sonozaki Mion: the tomboy. Leader of the club at school. Spoke of the dam project protests like she was there. Claims no violent crimes were committed. About 17 years old. Furude Rika: sweet little girl. Played the role of shrine maiden at the Cotton-Drifting Festival. Claims to like to kill them gently with poison. Appears to be around 12 years old. Houjou Satoko: loud little brat. Speaks like she comes from nobility but is clearly poor af. About 12 years old. Tomitake-san: male photographer. Claimed to travel to Hinamizawa from Tokyo a few times a year. Dead af. No drugs were found in his system but apparently he clawed out his own throat?! Takano-san: mysterious woman with Tomitake. Disappeared on the night of Watanagashi. Was she spirited away by a demon? Ooishi-san: police detective from Okinomiya City. Asks Keiichi as an outsider to be his informant among the youths. Satoshi-kun: a boy who once attended the school in Hinamizawa. Rena claims he transferred shortly after she arrived in Hinamizawa last year. Ooishi claims he disappeared after a drug addict beat his aunt to death.

I am actually SO VERY envious of Japan having countless festivals throughout the countryside. The only "traditions" I had growing up were sneaking sips of Jack Daniels from my dad's decanter, smoking week outta Lone Star cans when my boy brother visited, going to Grandma's every Xmas to eat and watch Star Wars on TV, playing inside the house every New Years, 4th of July, and Memorial Day while our parents got wasted and skinnydipped. I would have LOVED to have a big gathering with food stalls and a local ritual to participate in. Our County Fair each year was just where to drop off parents so that us teens could go goof around in a parking lot or park somewhere. Le sigh.

14:00 Sooo...... this kid should just walk back to class reeking of cigarette smoke?!?! I used to smoke and that sounds like a horrible thing to me!

20:00 Considering how tiny that village is, if I were this kid, I would have come up with an innocuous explanation. Like that a cop asked me where I'd one the previous night and if I'd seen anything strange or suspicious during the festival. That would have been 100% true. It's easiest to keep a story straight when you set up a truth to believe in. Dumb kid.
