To this day it baffles me that people HATE Subaru for rejecting Rem. The dude is allowed to love who he wants, he doesn't owe her a romantic relationship. He was mature about it and told her up front how he feels. And they don't make it obvious in the anime, but in the novels he is actually pretty torn between his feelings for the two of them. Before the battle against the White Whale, Rem brings up the option of her being his second wife, which Subaru is somewhat on board with, assuming it comes to that (not exactly the greatest solution, but it's something). Minor season 2 spoilers: A lot of people also just dislike Emilia because she doesn't have much of a character yet compared to Rem, but Emilia comes into her own in season 2, that's kind of just an issue of Rem's character being expanded upon way more before Emilia got a chance.
