This episode gave me Dragon Quest (the armor) and Yakuza Like a Dragon vibes (the bat and being able to see "monsters").

The awesome thing with this episode is it shows just how different Maniwa and Ikari's interrogation and detective styles are. Ikari is so old school that he can't put himself in a kid's shoes and fantasies, hence why the entire time he's seen in his suit and tie in comparison to Maniwa, whose youth and more empathetic nature allows him to understand and get to the heart of what Makoto's talking about, hence why he's constantly switching outfits like he's changing in game classes. One of my fave episodes because it's so damn clever with how it goes about this tonal shift while still keeping intact the psychological and philosophical tone of the series generally

I'm happy you're loving this as much as I did, and you're clocking everything perfectly mashallah lol. To answer your question; this author is mainly famous for his anime movies and this series is more of a hidden gem. His movies are all mind-fuckening but my fav anime movie of all time is a comedy movie by the same author lol (it's called Tokyo Godfathers)
