Over the past few months, I have had a few people send me messages or quite Patreon because they find the fee structure to be too complex.  Should I simplify?

I currently have things set up so that:

All Core Knowledge and Easy tutorials are free

Some Intermediate are free, but most of them are unlocked at the $3 level

Some Advanced are unlocked at $3, and all of them are unlocked at $5

My theory was that this would allow people at one level to sample the next level up

However, I think it might just be frustration some people because, if they don't explicitly check a particular tutorial before signing up, they might think they are getting access to something that they are not.  This could make them fell like they got bait-and-switched, which is the farthest thing from what I want.

Now what I could do, is just simplify things and make the lines clear:

All Core Knowledge and Easy tutorials are free

All Intermediate are unlocked at the $3 level

All Advanced are unlocked at $5

Which way do you think I should go?

If content was color coded by tier, anyone could tell at a glance exactly what they had access to, which might be a quick visual aid.

I recommend not simplifying in the way you've suggested. You are my only Patreon and the reason I joined was because I got samples of complex stuff I couldn't do on my own already. I would have been a lot more hesitant if I could only view your easy stuff. Wish you all the best, man, you deserve to be successful. :)

Sarah Miller

To follow up my comment, a suggestion! I think color coding free vs $3 vs $5 is a good idea, but I would not base it on the difficulty level. You could add a "tagging" system to each of your tutorials that would make it a lot easier to find items which are available at your level. For example, the ability to search "free" and "chest/arms" to find free tutorials for tying the arms. You could expand this tagging idea to ramp up your organization in lots of ways as well.

You could always shuffle some of the difficulties and create an “Expert” difficulty. The top 2 tiers are paid for, and core knowledge through intermediate is free. Regardless, I think simplying where each level is either completely free or completely paid is definitely better and that’s how I’m voting.

Dor Hananel

Make it more complex, there is already plenty of simple stuff on the website we need more elaborate ones

Hmmm how many people choose the $3 option maybe it would be better to simplify to a nice starter collection of ties for the uninitiated and then a full access for $5. I think it’s great that you offer a good range for free. I think you’re instructions are really well done and well worth the $5 a month.

Rami Nasra

I only upgraded after I got a chance to try some of the more intermediate instructions. I would suggest keeping things as they are.

Ron

I voted to simplify, only because I want you to have the freedom to change things as you see fit to keep as many patreons as possible. I pay for the top tier patreon, Count. I believe you deserve that, due to the work it takes to create the videos, and due to your creativity and knowledge. I also like the ability to download your videos to my tablet to play back when I am off line. I will continue to be a top tier patreon no matter if you simplify or not. You do what needs to be done, to keep your patreons. You get the feed back. You are more knowledgeable on this subject than I am. *smiles*

I quite like things the way they are, even though I have access to them all ($5 is not exactly that much for what you give us) its not rocket science. I do like lookinmg at the more complex things, even though I am unlikely to use them (my partner wouldn't physically take suspension) But I do quite like the idea of colour coding for simplicity, (or simply badge them by the levels Equire, Knights and Barons)

Thea Mc Donald

I find your options fair, your content is worth every cent

Chris Hakala

People will come and go but as sara miller said abow here, you are also my only patreon. It's not too expensive. It's a fair price for the quality service and help you get. Plus you always expand? People who smoke or drink spend a shit ton of money every month. So that's their priority.

Eivind Dahl

Simplify but have free samples of any tier.

Jess Evans

I found it frustrating when i couldnt access all of the harley quinn set, i kinda thought that should be kept together otherwise its almost (gah i hate saying this) like i felt manipulated into getting the $5, because i could do half. Would even have preferred it to all go up to $5

Aaron Ark Angel

I just became a patron so I have no opinion on the matter.

Lazarus Redmayne

@Jess Evans. That’s a really good point. I split it up because the 3 elements can all be useful separately and 2 are significantly easier to do than the primary corset. But I take your point that it can feel like a manipulation. What I have now done is copy all three into one Harley Quinn corset tutorial at the $5 level, and then renamed the other two so they are just stand-alone tutorials. That should help avoid that issue. Thanks for telling me about it so I could address it!

Lazarus Redmayne

Great idea! I like the color coding too, but because of some limitations of wordpress, that will be a harder approach to work out. Your badge idea I can do quite easily though! I just have to figure out some icon that will do the trick...

Scott Gilfoil

I would actually recomend reducing it to maybe just 1 level gets you access to the whole site. So instead of having a $3 and a $5 tier, just have the one $5 tier.

Mark Saint

Want me to scrape my brain for ideas and throw you a couple ? Kinda needs to be simple but strong... maybe a knot ? (Thinking of my Cub Scout days :-) )

Lazarus Redmayne

LOL, I love it! Unfortunately, because of field types and other tech BS, I need the short term solution to be an icon in an existing font set that I can just call. When I have some time to worry about coding, I can make it do more fun things like that.. It may (for now) have to be as boring as using circled numbers: ③⑤⑩⑳ or ❸❺❿⓴

Mark Saint

Hmmm _ see your point (I used to do a lot of Wordpress) Well you could go a bit latin ɑ - Aplha β - Beta ɸ (Pi - come on everyone loves Pie :-) ) Ω Ohm or Omega ɷ (closed Omega - looks like a bum to me ꚙ - to me the infinity sign Ꚙ (bigger Ꙭ - Cyrillic - Double monocular o (looks like boobies ) then I know it wont help the titles, but you 'could' use a simple graphic/icon as a watermark on the first image (simple layer/transparancy) Feel free to contact me, if you want to discuss that further and/or help to get you going (I was thinking you could go: simple overhand knot / Larkshead or Square knot / and a Garrick or a double coin for top tier )

Lazarus Redmayne

Fund ideas! Unfortunately, I can't call a different font set in the fields that I am planning to use. I will come up with something cooler later, but I have for now just tagged them all with the circle numbers and created a page that lets you easily filter by cost for those that wish to do so... I'm going to let it sit a day or two and see if people coming to the site spontaneously give me any feedback on what I put together. Then I will make a broader announcement to the membership so they can check it out. Thanks for all your great feedback and ideas!!!

Lazarus Redmayne

I really do appreciate your thoughts on this, but I have a whole other set of goals for this month and hadn't planned on this at all...and don't want to get sucked down a rabbit hole :D

Tommaso Magherini

Hi Lazarus, I have a problem with the login. It returns every time Sorry. Login aborted due to an API error. - Patreon returned: cURLerror28:Operationtimedoutafter5000millisecondswith0bytesreceived .

Rane M

It sounds more like a communication/labeling problem. I would add a colorful sticker to the preview photo or the page of each "sample" tutorial with a link to the fee structure that can be clicked on. For example, I go looking through all of my newly available tutorials grouped by difficulty (table of contents style) and next to the name of the tutorial, there is a Basic+ symbol next to the Intermediate freebie. Then, in the advanced section, there's a label for Intermediate+ next to the Advanced freebie.

Lazarus Redmayne

Hi Tommaso, Patreon was having a problem for hte last few days, which they now tell me has been resolved. Give it a shot again. LMK what happens!

Bobby Goodhair

A late comment to this: I don't think the fee structure or of the tutorials should change. However, if we're saying "simplify" the ties themselves, I would agree. I think many of these tutorials (and this is a totally general western thing I think) are pretty complex and many of them serve as essentially decorative wear. I feel that "western" shibari has an emphasis on creating intricate ties and photos, whereas in Japanese shibari it's more focused on pain and using shibari in a sexual context – which means pretty simple ties and really working with the body and environement more. I could be TOTALLY wrong. But as a layman, I would appreciate some simpler ties / tutorials, that can be used in an intimate / sexual / bedroom setting. Related to this, I had suggested doing a "how did they do that" type tutorial, which I super appreciate that you did. But these two suggestions are kind of related: with that and in general, I'd suggest doing some simpler ties that are less decorative maybe, and are more "play" focused. I also undersstand that if I was more advanced maybe applying some of these could be easy and part of play... but with my limited experience it seems super far off that I could apply a Dragonfly or Peach Tie and keep the sexual energy going.
