Once dead, you either go to heaven, or hell. Many are unable to cross into either, and are thus doomed to roam as a spectre. 

It isnt all bad, being a spectre relieves the need to eat, sleep, or other necessities. It gets boring, being bodyless, and some have developed a hobby of possessing others to regain the feeling of physicality
