The year is 2004, the Gamecube is out, and the Mario... is paper (for the second time).
Yes, it is Paper Mario TTYD!

I've always been aware of TTYD's critical acclaim, and through general osmosis absorbed a great deal of the games plot points but nay, it was not until last year did I myself play through the game. And to everyone's shocking surprise, it is in fact.... quite good!

I think if there was one thing that truly stuck out to me was beginning the game, heading into Rogue port and just saying the gallows right there front and center, like, people got hung/hang/hungeth/hangedeth in this world, that's just a part of the world. The game's also surprisingly horny. Pushing death and horns aside however, the games just a very charming romp through undisclosed section of the mushroom kingdom with a host of quirky and memorable characters.

If you've not played the TTYD, I do recommend it. It's ever so slightly padded in a / "go to point A, oh you need an item well you should go back to where you started now, and then back to point A and sometimes back to where you started again" way but doesn't do it so much it becomes annoying. (Outside the search for General White...that's pretty egregious haha)

My favourite part of the demake is probably a tie between the reimagined/take on the title screen or the inventory screen. More specific, my favourite part might be the tiny spiral on Hooktail's head which is 80% cut off :D.

As for the next demake...I'm thinking some PS2 vs PS2....;D.

It's always the case when I see a new demake from you, but it's even more true here: man do I want this to be a real thing. I know it's a pipe dream (get it because mario and pipes haha comedy) and we'll never see this in action, but it never hurts to imagine what could have been. Heck if we could get a Paper Mario game as good as this one again I'd be happy. Excellent work on this as always! It must not have been easy to try and capture the "paperness" of the original game with the GB limitations, but I think you've done a great job on that. It kind of has a chibi/SD look compared to what Mario usually looks like on Gameboy I think, and it works pretty well here.

Aw shucks <3 and agreed, I feel kind of sad how very company-mandated and locked in style the Paper Mario series had to abide by. It feels like Nintendo only has one model/reference for characters nowadays and designers need to follow that to a T. We saw that in the Mario & Luigi rpg remakes for 3DS, just a lot of style and character lost. And thank you kindly! It was tricky to not only try and capture that paper look with purely pixels, it was tricky to not basically ape/rip off Paper Mario 64's pixel sprites. It does help chunky and chibi style sprites do work very well with pixel art as a whole! Glad you enjoyed it and hope you like the sprites coming up ;D. (especially yours, Don Pianta and Mayor Dour are looking QUITE snazzy!)
