Got to admit with this demake I was extremely worried and excited to do more background art. There's truly something quite dauntingly appealing about detailed backgrounds with foreground characters. Something about how you handle each subsequent layer, the types of line colour, how you choose to make one thing a silhouette or maybe it has some outline and shading.

And most fun is just anachronistically changing things because you're a big stickler for feel, Layton's sprite in the original game is front facing even during dialogue exchanges with townsfolks and it was....inside you are two wolves scenario.
The one is saying "stick to tha original mannnn" and the other is "oh ho, this is your chance to update the initial entry into the series to better fit in line with the subsequent games, take it, the shot, take your chance, go on, do it, do it, do it"

Maybe that's just me though. Either way, had a lot of fun cramming the backgrounds down to GB size and battling that tile limit as always!

I hadn't even noticed Layton's change because it fits in so well! It was definitely a strange design choice originally, so I can understand your want to improve it!

Thanks Sami! It's funny going back to the first Layton I didn't even remember Laytons sprite being different. A similar thing happened when I booted it up and the title screen wasn't playing what I dub "the main layton theme". The track instead is called St. Mystere. The main theme is used as the title theme in the two sequels after which is probably why I retroactively thought the first game used it too. I used it in the ROM because of that and used St. Mystere for the talking scenes. Memory is a funny old thing!
