Hello, All (๑╹ω╹๑ ) !

I got some big (to me) personal news🙌.

I'm an auntie! A crow auntie! The mating pair just introduced me to their ✨babies✨Okay, not babies, but this is the first time I've seen them out of the nest. They're very young and silly. I'll do a separate post because I got some videos I want to post, too. So cute!

But before that, I keep waking up at two or two thirty every day. It's so exhausting. I've stopped doomscrolling news and have started either reading a good book or working on writing (I think I've got a good solid start on the middle grade book I'm working on-Yay!). Then the other night I grabbed the mics and put them out on the veranda.

It just happened to be a cool night so the frogs weren't super genki, more laid back and sporadic. But that's a neat vibe, too. So I asked Richard to cut out a 20-minute section that sounded good as well as do his magic to make it sound even better (take out the random car driving by at that hour, etc.) and that's what this post is about. The attached mp3 is from the rice fields behind my house. They were just plowed and flooded two weeks ago, then planted last week. This is a photo from a year or so ago. It looks like he's not going to plant the three you see closest to me. The dirt part is owned by someone else and stays dirt or weeds all year long. Anyway, the farmer is getting older and is looking to sell the land. He tried to sell it last year to build a bunch of houses, but my neighbors (thank you, neighbors!) lost their shit about it. It's so lovely to have the fields. No one wants a new neighborhood especially when there are so many houses everywhere that are sitting empty. So he backed off...for now.

I hope the chilly rice field frogs and buzzy spring insects bring you some peace and maybe a little sleep. I'll record again once they really warm up and get more excited about finding 'friends'.

XO,

t

hehe Congrats on becoming an aunt! We've got a very entertaining family of ravens here, and have recently watched the 'babies' playing a game of 'pass the twig', where the siblings take turns pulling twigs from the tree they perch on and trying to pass them back and forth without dropping. Quite an impressive feat without hands hehe Such clever, curious birds! p.s. My partner and I have been taking turns reading each other entries from your wonderful Book of Japanese Folklore. So fascinating and fun!

We have a crow family that nests in a giant pine tree right next to our backyard. The fledglings are so awkward and ugly looking at first! Takes a while for all the feathers to grow in, and they don't always follow the same growth pattern. So we sometimes have a bald headed youngster, or the neck and chest might stay naked for some time. Looks bad, but they're fine as long as they can stay safe while learning to fly. My favorite part though, is the "feed me" noise, it sounds like a goblin gargling. Took me a long time to figure out what the sound was but I finally saw one doing it before being fed. Even after they fledge they'll try it any time an adult crow gets near, but the parents start ignoring the request.

This is so peaceful! I like the chill frogs, sounds like what I'd hear growing up. The bugs and wonderful, too. And congrats on Auntie-dom! Earning the trust of an animal is such an amazing thing 🙂

My absolute favorite thing in the world right now is when mama and sometimes papa feeds them (even though they look like they could fend for themselves) and they make this hilarious almost strangling sound and are so content afterwards.

Oh this is wonderful! These are all filled in but absolutely awkward, not good at flying or perching yet, total dorks. Adorable. And I just laughed out loud, I was answering bottom up and just wrote on Court's comment about that sound. You nailed it! Goblin Gargling! I finally got a video of mom coming in snagging a couple peanuts and big babe requesting them. They kind of hope out of sight of the camera but as soon as you can't see them: goblin gargling!

Oh! Liv! I just watched the video Richard made and you can see my phone has one of your stickers on it! It's by his plate at the end. The goat.

It gives me warm fuzzies knowing my art gets out and about in interesting places.
