The answer to the age-old question: Do crows like strawberries? (Patreon)
Content
It got warm finally -- for only a day or two, but -- I'm seeing my crow couple together more and more. Last year they had three babies! I'm hoping for three more this year. I'm keeping my eyes on them. Offering encouraging words, that kind of thing.
I left those old flowers out there as kind of a hint. Hmmm, should you be building a nest perhaps? Why not use these to make it more lovely? They seem very uninterested though. Buddy actually plucked the fluffy carnation I put in his dish up and tossed it aside.
So yesterday I had some left over strawberry pieces and decided to see if they were interested in those for a change. Surely there is some micronutrient that a mama crow needs to grow her babies.
The answer was a hard NO! As you can see just a few seconds into the video.
The first to land is the male (Buddy). He's very used to me and will get quite close, won't yet take food from my hand, but will get within an arm's distance. He's the one who yeets the strawberry bits. He also march-hops right toward in a "What is that crap?" kinda way. Too funny.
Sweet Pea comes next. She is more skittish, but much better this spring. If you look carefully she favors one of her legs. I think she's had an injury awhile back and sometimes limps or rocks when she walks. Poor thing. We do have three or four hawks who can be right jerks. Keeping an eye on them as well.
The second fade in video is after I gave them a little dog kibble. Buddy usually hogs all the food, so I give her some in a different place (on that middle rail) while Buddy's elsewhere. I love when she pokes her head through the rails, too.
But crow walking and hopping and hop-walking is what truly brings a smile to my face. I'm nervous and anxious about everything at the moment, but this made me smile, so I thought I'd share. 🥰
