I had no idea. Yesterday I had two friends over and we got to catch up for about five hours. Toward the end of our long lunch one started talking about the huge earthquake that was going to hit Shizuoka and kill 300,000 people.

What?

I mean, we're always told to be ready for a mega earthquake. But she was convinced she knew when it was going to happen.

What?

Evidently, there is a manga writer/artist named Ryo Tatsuki who keeps a dream diary. In 1999 she published a manga based on those dreams called: "The Future I Saw". "Watashi ga mita mirai".

On the cover is a drawing of a woman crying and holding one hand up. All around her are pieces of paper with different "prophecies". One of those says, "Major Disaster, March, 2011."

Someone noticed that's when the Tohoku Earthquake happened.

In 2021, "The Complete Version" of her manga was published and in this one it said "the REAL disaster will occur in July, 2025."

More details have come out and the story is the ocean floor between the Philippines and Japan will burst with bang and a huge tsunami will hit. And the exact time is July 5th, 4:18 am. Of course this was picked up by social media, Youtubers, Tiktokers, and the like went nuts and started adding more disaster to the stew. Fuji-san is going to erupt as well. Oh, also a meteor is going to hit at the same time.

Anyway, I just thought it was interesting how there's all kinds of stuff out there about it in English, Chinese, Thai, etc. and I seem to have missed it entirely. But my one friend is so concerned about it all, she's already booked a trip out of Shizuoka (since we're going to get hit the hardest) and will be gone on July 5th, when the Mega Quake is supposed to happen. The other friend knew all about it, too, but was a little less nervous. Not completely though. She works not too far from the sea but said since it's a Saturday she'll be at home and hopefully safe.

I guess I'm mostly surprised at how much traction the "prediction" has gotten, even outside of Japan. Evidently, they're reporting tourism is also taking a hit, just around that time.

I was just curious if anyone else had heard these rumors or not.

XO, stay safe and well,

When I was living in Tokyo in the 1980s, there were a series of eruptions on the Izu Seven Islands, which is an archipelago in the sea near Tokyo. There was one on Miyake-jima, in 1983 (before my time in Japan), and then a spectacular one in 1986 on Oshima, which is the biggest island in the chain, closest to the mainland. That one I do remember; one of my students was from Oshima, and her family had to be evacuated. There happened to be a TV crew on the island filming at the observation center near the crater when the eruption occurred, and it was pretty spectacular (no one was hurt, although the island was evacuated). Then in 1989, a fissure opened in the sea just off the coast of Honshu, in between Oshima and the mainland, and a new underwater volcano started forming. There were literally hundreds of earthquakes and it was really terrifying for the local people. Pundits began pointing out the pattern that every three years, there was an eruption on this fissure line, and the eruptions were creeping closer and closer to the mainland... and the next major volcano in the line was Fuji-san. There were tons of articles and rumors swirling that Fuji was going to erupt in 1992, in keeping with the "pattern." And here we are in 2025, and it hasn't happened yet. So I would take all these things with a grain of salt!

Hmmm... We listen to a fair number of podcasts and YouTubers on Japan-related topics, and yet this all has escaped us, somehow! Wild!

I've read about this. Sounds like it will be a good day to go to places in Shizuoka that are usually too crowded!

Daniel

Well, this would be the first I've heard of it ... seems interesting... how many other predictions were correct in the Manga? Do you have a "Bug out bag" made up?

It's fascinating. I want to read more but it seems like there are rumors about her predicting Freddie Mercury's death, Princess, Dianna's death, AND the pandemic. But then when you dive deeper, those were started by others and not in her. Just trying to separate things she's really predicted from the sensationalism is maddening. Lol YES! I have a Bug Out Closet, actually. But that's been forever. They've been predicting the Tokai Earthquake since I came to Japan. My old house was closer to the ocean, but this one is a bit farther away, no mountains to slide down either. The river is concerning, but two out of three ain't bad. The dirt park in front of the house is an evacuation area. So I filled a closet (near the front door) with all the essentials.

Daniel

Well, the point of the bag is that you can throw it on your back and walk away with it… Not quite sure how you’re gonna get the closet on your back, but it’s good. You’re thinking about it in case you become the shelter in place location.

You HAVE heard! I wonder if anyone is taking advantage of it? Booking because prices are cheaper? I did somewhere flights from Hong Kong were being cut down from three a week to two a week. I forget where they were flying into though.

I remember hearing about those quakes! Yes, yes, definitely about taking with a grain of salt. The Fuji-san erupting is also still going on. Every year, every year.

This was the first I'd heard of it, but I have since seen articles on CNN and in the Japan times
