Hey hey, All〜 👋

I'm going to put up the Nagoya trip photos/videos of the Yōkai Exhibit and environs (and play by play) for patrons soon, but first something super freaky-deaky happened. What I'm deeming is a miracle.

It's a mystery wrapped up in a riddle, tied with a conundrum bow. A miracle!

Please someone explain🙏.

Story:

I had an axolotl for many, many years. At some point I thought it was lonely and bought some minnows to keep it company. You can imagine what happened. I've never seen him so happy, energetic and bloodthirsty. Poor minnows. Happy axy.

I did feel I owed the minnows something, so I had my own kind of Minnow Squid Game. I'd buy ten at a time and the last surviving one (or two) I'd rescue and put in a separate tank. Now, these little fellows are a little shell shocked, watching their friends get eaten in front of their faces. But they all recovered, got along well and their numbers increased. Fast forward to my sweet axy passed away. 🪽

Now I have a bunch of minnow pets. Not too exciting, but cute. Minnows have a lifespan of about 2~4 years, so over time they'd die. One or another. There's a minnow graveyard in my garden.

Then there were three.

One Pink Variety and two Gray Variety. The pink one kept laying eggs but because they weren't fertilized, they never hatched. No bebes. Not sure if the grays were male or female, but they never laid eggs and never fertilized the pink one's eggs. Mystery. Those eggs all disappeared anyway. Not so much a mystery. Most likely eaten.

About nine months ago Pink died. I really liked her. She was so genki and friendly. Made me sad. NINE months ago. Keep that in mind. Only two grays left. After a couple months one of them passed. One gray left. The proverbial (and literal) winner of the Minnow Squid Game.

It's been alive in the big tank for about three months, all by itself. Note: there's no gravel. One plant, some rocks arches to hide under. Pretty much living the minnow life all by itself. Here comes the miracle.

Last week I came downstairs and said hello and went to feed it, when I saw that it had died, too. #sad But for some reason I scanned the tank and saw something moving.

The tiniest baby minnow!! One single baby minnow. Looks just hatched, smaller than a grain of rice!

Where the ever-loving crap did it come from?! That's not a rhetorical question. I want to know. There were no eggs, no other fish, the particular fish had never laid eggs anyway.

And let's say there were some eggs hidden somewhere dormant, what made them hatch and why only ONE and why the exact same day this one died?

I'm stumped.

Fishy is still alive (photo) and I named it Kiseki (Miracle). I have to grind food super fine because it's so tiny.

Any Minnow Specialists out there?

XOXO, stay safe and well, more soon,

terrie

I'm afraid I'm gonna be the spoilsport here - to me it does not sound miraculous that this was when you saw the baby for the first time. It's been hiding in the plant and rock arches so the adult didn't eat it, and now it's finally safe for it to come out. sorry :) But it's still a very nice thing to have happen!

Whatever the explanation, this is such a delightful story and a relatable feeling! I've had similar experiences with various creatures that I've come to love seemingly vanishing, only to reappear after I've given up on them hehe

Ah, that could be. But it is very newly hatched. The photo it looks big. I should have put up the video, but it has the dead one in it. In this scenario, I'm imagining this baby fish managed to murder the adult! Nicely horrific and also, a miracle!

It may be small because all the hiding meant it hasn't been able to get much to eat. But never mind, your story is SO much better :D

Any chance you have an external filter? I cleaned mine one day and found a whole school of baby fish living in the filter. I just dumped them in the main tank… They seem to do just fine. I think what had happened is the adults were laying eggs and as they floated through the filter kept them.

Not even an external filter. These puppies were just living the tough life. Although they seemed happy enough. I love the image of your filter being full of baby fish though. How cute! And shocking!

I'm with Linda here, Terry. I used to have minnows in my axolotl tank, too, and had 'strange things' happen with them all the time. As minnows are cannibalistic, my guess would be that you had a female (Pink) and at least one male (among the Greys) in your last batch and that the eggs were probably always fertilized, but always eaten. And if a baby fish hatched before, it hid itself as best as it could, but was ultimately eaten before reaching adulthood. And now as the numbers of potential predators have dwindled, the one survivor has come out of hiding. You didn't talk about time spans, aka how long ago it was that Pink and Grey 1 died. Another possibility is that Grey and Gray were always a couple, but as grey minnows are usually the 'wild' variant, they have less exaggerated gender dimorphism than all the colorful, genetically engineered ones. So you probably didn't notice. They are also a little less 'desperate' when it comes to breeding, so maybe laid less eggs to begin with or none at all as they were too stressed out by Pink's mannerisms, and as Pink died, they had their chance. That'd be my guess(es), anyways! In any case, it's fair to call the last ine miracle squid - they truly won the game!

Yeah, I've been thinking about what Linda and Daniel said and perhaps I totally missed a brood of fish hatching and mostly being eaten, then one survived under the arch and only came out when that last big minnow was dead, knowing it was finally safe. It's still alive and looks to be getting a little bit bigger. I suppose once it's big enough I'll buy some more minnows to keep it company and see what other high jinks ensue.
