[ This post isn't about delicious Slimes cakes. Although....it could be! ]

Hey hey, Everyone (^O^)ļ¼

I had written this post while awake at 2:00 am the other night, typed it into google keep, and then when I went to copy paste it here, *gone*. So starting again.

I'm here to float an idea by you all. First, several of you have mentioned this or suggested it over the years and I always really loved the idea but wasn't sure how to actually make it happen. I see the goal and I see where I am now, but I can't envision the road to get from here to there.

Well, recently, I noticed that Liv Albert from the podcast "Let's Talk About Myths, Baby" is actually doing it and seeing that it's possible (proof of concept?) has gotten me re-excited about it. Tentatively. I want to run the idea by you all first.

Keep in mind, this is the very beginning of the idea and I'm super open to any and all suggestions, opinions, better ideas.

That is: ✨Special✨ tours run by Richard and me. So the idea is, not a whole lot of people. Off the top of my head maybe around ten-ish (I think that's what Liv does). Although the very first one might be smaller just to get the ball rolling.

So, let's say ten people. Of course, patrons get first dibs. Of (also) course, you can bring a partner, friend, family member. Or alone is fine.

The way Liv does it is the participants pay for their own airfare and travel insurance. I'm not exactly sure her details, but perhaps have a day where everyone arrives in Japan, since the times will be all over the place. Then maybe we all meet up for dinner, everyone stays the night at the same place, and it's from the next day we start the adventures.

R and I will take care of hotels, transportation, breakfasts, reservations any place...that'll all be a part of the tour cost.

Now, the fun part is what to do? The whole idea of these would be to do and experience all those things you can't do if you come alone or are on some random tour. Things off the beaten track, more real Japan if that doesn't sound too trite.

If we did a tour around here, I've already been brainstorming ideas and talking with Japanese friends who want to help out. For example, one good buddy lives near the beach and goes daily at dawn to do yoga while the sun rises over the ocean and there's Mt Fuji in the distance. Her photos are fantastic.

I also have connections with an grape orchard that does little parties under the vines drinking their own brand of wine and beer (!) while eating some very unique to Shizuoka foods. Anyway, lots of connections and friends and I can easily find a ton of cool things to do, places to go, restaurants to eat at. There is so much! I've got three decades of friends and family and connections, so lots of ideas.

We could do something like a Folklore Tour where we visit Kintaro's Shrine and where he broke the huge boulder in half, and stuff like that. So all our destinations center around various folklore, legendary heroes.

Or a Yōkai Tour, a Nana Fushigi Tour (The Rock that Cries at Night is near here), historical spots, an all food and drink tour, haunted spots? Lafcadio Hearn tour? Tokugawa Ieyasu is all over Shizuoka. Castles? Temples? Shrines? I am friendly with a nice temple here, early morning Zazen? Oh! OH! I'm spitballing here as I write, but ten days of nothing but nature, yoga, meditation, talks on life and living from a Buddhist monk? A total Spiritualling Out Tour?

As long as it's not something you could do on another tour or by yourself, I think this might be an absolute blast.

And not just in the Shizuoka area, either. We could go to some other prefecture. Hokkaido? Richard and I could scout it out and find all the treasures to see, do, and eat there.

Again, this is the first nebulous mushy phase of a dream. I know Liv a little bit (we share a publisher and our books are in the same series and we've talked privately online) and the bond her tour group forms and the friendships made is one of my favorite parts of this idea. Like we'll all be hanging out together for ten-ish days, of course there will be free time, but, yeah, kinda we'll become an even close knit uncanny familyšŸ’•.

So, what do you think? Is this a viable idea? There will be a fee for the ten days, hotel, transportation, and the time and all the planning, so please keep that in mind. I think I'm going to reach out to Liv and see how she worked that all out. And I'm also totally open to ideas for types of tours. I know Liv goes to a lot of museums, archaeological spots, and historical spots related to the Greek gods.

I have the BIG deadline next spring, and it's going to take lots of planning and coordinating, so I'm tentatively going to say next fall/winter would be the first one.

And about the Slimes cakes. Yeah, they're sold in a little shop near me. We could eat those and a million other yummy things, too!

Tell me what you think! Message me, too, if you don't want to comment here. This is one of those things that has been brewing for so long and I'd regret it forever if I didn't at least throw the idea out there and see if it has legs or not.

XO, Slimes don't have legs.

I think this is a totally awesome idea and well worth putting out there! People are often wanting travel plans that include their own specific interests, and having knowledgeable local guides is a real pull, plus getting to meet and spend time with you and Rich. I would totally do this if I had the money, health, and wasn't hugely afraid of being devoured by a yamauba!

If I didn’t have two small kids I’d be on my way to the airport already! I’ve been to Japan before but nothing beats a lokal guide and some insider knowledge and of course making new friends (which is more difficult if it’s just you and your partner+kids traveling). So, great idea and I bet you’ll find a great interested group for this kind of adventure 😊

If the dream works out, I'd love to do one or two a year (spring and fall?) and then...like continue to do them. When the little ones are a bit older, a kid friendly family tour? There are lots of neat things for kids to do, too.

I LOVE this idea! My husband and I have finally gotten our last child off to college and have been looking for some travel opportunities, but since we haven't traveled much there are places we would not really feel comfortable going unless we were with a tour guide. This sounds lovely. And it's right up our alley.

This is the kind of dedicated service that is too often missing from travel companies!

I have a LOT of thoughts on this and Discord would be easier, but I'll try to keep it short. You want to at least start out by offering one day guided tours of your area. People get themselves to a train station, you meet them, you take them around. This would be VERY easy to get started. There are platforms where you can offer yourself as a tour guide, as well as offering it to people who follow your social media. Then: maybe you really only ever want to offer tours like this, because offering ten day tours means you're going into a whole different business that doesn't necessarily play to your strengths. Your strength is knowing cool stuff - do you really want to spend a lot of time dealing with travel logistics for groups of people? The other thing is, you also don't NEED to offer whole-vacation tours anymore - maybe ten years ago you'd need to offer that much hand-holding to get people to come to Japan, but now everyone is coming anyway, and have some things they already want to do. Offering one day of planned activities to people who are coming anyway is much more manageable and there is a plenty big audience for that now. Also, that will get you more of the kind of customer who will be fun and pleasant to deal with. The kind of person who will get themself on a train to Shizuoka to meet you for a day is a VERY different customer than the one who wants you to hand everything to them on a silver platter and deal with their complaints when you don't. I mean, maybe your friend Liv knows how to get the right independent, intrepid customers for a long tour, but if so, that's an important thing to find out from her. But I'd be cautious about not attracting the kind of entitled people who want everything done for them.

Good Golly Miss Molly! This is a fabulous idea. Not that I’m in a position to take advantage of it, at present, alas. But what you’re describing is pretty much the #1 item on my bucket list. Yes, I have an actual bucket list.

I know a photographer who offers day and half-day walking tours, which is more the kind of thing that I think makes sense for you. I could ask him if he'd be willing to chat, if you want. Really - this doesn't have to be a way-off dream. I think if you look at it this way, you could literally start tomorrow. I'm coming in November, I'll be your guinea pig ;)

AJ

A ghostly uncanny tour would be fabulous. We really enjoyed our trip to Japan a couple of years ago and hope to go back in 2028. We took several walking tours in different cities and would love to be part of an off-beat tour group.

I'd actually adore this. I've been to Japan twice, the first time via a tour and the second with a group of friends, and whilst I loved both, I was restricted by those around me and unable to *really* get my teeth into the spooky and folkloric stuff I love. I dragged my partner around Tokyo visiting various shrines and yōkai spots, but I know there were many more I missed because I didn't know about them, and as a non-Japanese speaker/reader I was limited to mostly what I already knew. A folklore/spooky themed tour with expert guides and a group with similar interests sounds like a dream come true.

Samantha Moreno

This sounds like a super cool and fun idea!

Wowza. Why am I always 0 to a 1000? You're exactly šŸ’Æ correct about easing in, also shorter options. I think my image was Liv's where she had the group for a period of time and the common "theme". 4am. On phone. more when I'm awake on computer.

steve townsend

I actually really like Linda's idea of shorter tours, I've never been to Japan so if/when I do go I will want to spend some time doing the obvious touristy stuff, as it might be my only visit, but a one or even two-day Uncanny Japan tour would be fantastic.

Nemui

I think it sounds really neat but also something I wouldn't personally want to do. Being an introvert and having social anxiety I wouldn't want to commit to spending that much time around other people. Even with breaks for free time it's still just a break knowing I need to go back to being in a group. If you cut your teeth on a 1-2 day tour, that I would be interested in, but since you said you are looking to build bonds with the group, then maybe that's not fulfilling what you're looking for. I've heard Japanese haunted houses (as in the paid attraction) are terrifying so if there are ones that include yokai that might be something to include? Not my cup of tea but since some of your writing is horror it seems on brand.

Uncanny Japan -- Thersa Matsuura

Ironically enough...that's something I haven't thought about with me and R personally. We both work from home and except for his few students during the week, we have almost not interaction with people. My 90-year old neighbor occasionally. Friends I used to hang out with a lot, occasionally. My book club, one every two months. So that is something I should REALLY consider. There really is a lot yet to think about...very good points!

Uncanny Japan -- Thersa Matsuura

It's funny, I think I didn't consider shorter versions because watching Liv's success and how happy everyone was I think I thought that's the *only* way. Well, she doesn't live (ha) in Greece, so of course, it would be a combined trip and need to be more full on. Another positive about smaller groups, shorter trips is I can rent a bigger car and drive places. That's the think I don't think is so easy to do on normal tours or visits, get to the real out of the way places. Or it would just be too tiresome and troublesome to get a taxi, have them wait around, all that. Great input!

Terry, where do I sign up for this? I would love getting a guided tour by you & Richard! In my case though, I am not the type for travel agency planned stuff. I want to go on my own terms. BUT. If I could book you as a local guide, or join a day-trip-tour with overnight-stay for 1-2 days, I would simply plan the rest of my trip around that, covering my own transportation fees. I would love to see your uncanny Japan, Terry! Lafcadio Hearn tour, Shinmei Spotto tour, Nana Fushigi, or temples and shrine, frogs in the field, CROWS - I'd come back to Japan for each of them. :) I don't speak Japanese and some more obscure or abroad things are hard to get to when you can't properly communicate. I'm also a foodie and feel like I miss out on a lot of good, local stuff because of that. So, a day-trip to some remote, obscure or lesser-known shrine and a night in a ryokan with food, drink and story after would be a dream come true!

Uncanny Japan -- Thersa Matsuura

Thank you, this is all very good information. We are very flexible in these early stages and I mostly want to gauge interest and excitement and I can adjust as needed. I would so love to do a foodie tour. You just hit upon something that would be really fun...the day visiting certain places related to something, the at night the local cuisine, drinks, and a STORY! This is great stuff! Thank you~

Cassandra G

I also think this is great idea, I have never been to Japan and I think it would be helpful and fun to have such knowledgeable and creative people like you involved!

Alexej Axis

Gladly! I'd love to book you as a tour guide one day. So I'm really helping myself here as much as you. Maybe you could sell day-packages and 2-day-packages and longer tours to suit different ppl's needs if there's enough demand? The only complication with that might be to offer it long in advance so people can make travel arrangements. You'll want a bigger group so it doesn't get too pricey for individuals and it's still worth your time I reckon. And I guess restaurants & ryokan's are more prone to serving bigger groups if you want an exclusive deal. Me & my husband, we're booking Japan trips 6-12 months in advance to be able to scout flights at "reasonable" prices - and to make it worth our money for the flights, we're trying to stay 14-20 days. Plenty of days, to plan in one or two to spend with you and some other lovely folks. If you'd offer tours, I'd totally plan my stay around that, but I'd need to know where I need to be, when.

Brad Thornborrow

I would sign up for this in a second. Japan has been on my bucket list since I was a child, but an an introvert and terrible learning languages, I've just watched from afar. It'd be great not only to see all the folklore we've learned about, but also finally meet you in person!

Uncanny Japan -- Thersa Matsuura

Very cool. I'm also thinking reading all the comments that (duh) there are different kinds of visitors to Japan and different things work for different people. I do have a handful of other friends, patrons, and family who have never been, don't know the language very well, but are really interested and are wary of "your usual" tour. Thank you for letting me know and secretly I do want to meet so many of you šŸ’•

Liz

That sounds so amazing. Japan is a dream destination for me but I probably should try to learn at least a little of the language first. A tour with focus on folklore sounds so cool as well. I hope you get to do it!

Hannah Fenton

This sounds great, it would be a lot of fun. We’ve tried to find yokai museums/ other folklore things on our last two trips. It would also be really nice to meet you both in person. Sorry to be slow to reply - we’re currently in Maine, visiting family in Vermont too later this week. They let us into the U.S! We were a bit nervous about that.

Uncanny Japan -- Thersa Matsuura

So glad you are getting to visit family. So glad you are safe, but woo boy, must be nerve wracking. Let's explore yokai territory together!
