Reminds me of the Christmas & New Year I spent in Yokohama and my parents came over from Scotland to visit. We ordered Osechi from a really fancy depato. Myself, partner, and parents started working through the boxes and our guts were busted. Wow this is so much food! We couldn’t finish it all. It wasn’t until months later I found out the osechi was supposed to last 3 days not one meal 🤭 I made my own sweet red bean ozoni. My parents still follow a lot of old Scottish Hogmanay and New Years Day traditions like First Footing (first person should be tall, dark and handsome for maximum auspiciousness), throwing coins down the hall (for prosperity) etc. decorated and dressed up dried herring was a First Foot gift (now it tends to be shortbread) back when I was a wee laddie.

Love these stories about food and family tradition! My family, despite being very white/European, very much loves my tradition is making an Asian inspired dish for Christmas day. We have a more traditional Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve, but I've been making pad Thai for several years and this year we made ramen from scratch which was quite the undertaking but wonderful and everybody enjoyed it. It's nice to have a relatively light meal after all the heavy holiday meals and parties preceding Christmas Day. But I also love hearing about these New Year's traditions because it always seems like We bulldoze ourselves into Christmas and all the sudden it's over so it is nice to continue the festivities into the new year in a more traditional approach. I.e it's not just about finding someone to kiss at midnight. We've got a whole 2 and 1/2 months of winter left to celebrate and get our year in order. 😁🥰
