Yikes, Everyone! I just got in from my whirlwind trip to Hokkaido and have to (in five hours) head out to Tokyo for a "thing," and I really thought that I could get the podcast up without any hitches during that short window.

It's also Legends of Japan's book birthday today (September 1st) and I needed to make a little clip for that. Just a lot of plates spinning and I totally didn't count on the existential dread the last couple nights slaying my sleep and my brain being all bonkers. Good news: CRICKETS ARE DOING GREAT!!

I was a tad worried, leaving them for 2~3 days. Little fellas didn't even miss me.

So Hokkaido was a blast as usual, much, much too short. Also ran into a little local festival I got some video of. I'm going to make a post about that and edit together the video as well. I'll do that for everyone as soon as I get back from Tokyo.

I got the final final version of Dark Tales from Japan the morning I left for Julyan's and had a treacherous time trying to download it because the permissions weren't working. They only give a week to read through it all, and the editor said we went quite a bit over our page number limit. She managed to get some pages added, but said she still had to cut some stuff and now I'm freaking out because I need to look at all those cuts! But I keep having to leave the house.

So, I haven't been to the ol' Edo capital in ages. Sort of not particularly looking forward to it, until it was suggested we stop by Asakusa before coming home and now I'm a little looking forward to it. But maybe crowded? 😂

My brain is okayū

Mmm...okayū 😋

Okay, matsuri post and video coming soon ٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶〜〜

XOXO,

if you haven't been to Edo in a while, oh man yeah Asakusa has gotten SO crowded. but if you leave Nakamise and go to the other bits of it, it's not as bad. good luck!

Linda, I almost had a nervous breakdown. I'm sure you remember when it used to be a handful of ojiichan and obaachan, your occasional tourist. But this was...I really don't even want to think about it, I was so shocked. Everyone screamy and ME ME ME!! All kinds of things had DON'T TOUCH! written on them. Not in Japanese, mind you. I haven't really experienced that or thought about it, but how DO you remedy over tourism so that not just the locals, but the people visiting get a nice experience?

yeah, I honestly don't know. I've been hoping that some other country will take over as the number one place everyone wants to travel to, but it seems like there is no end in sight. I'm just glad I don't do travel writing anymore - in retrospect I feel guilty that some of what I wrote probably contributed to this. They keep talking about how Japan needs to attract some of these tourists to places outside of Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka that really need the business, but it doesn't seem like there is a real strategy. And honestly these trends seem to be a force of nature that mere governments and tourism boards can't really control.
