Here's part of the Setsubun event that happened last Monday at a local shrine (Yaizu Jinja).

Back in the day there were so~ many people. When they threw out the packages of lucky roasted beans, you would open them to find some had numbers in them. Afterward, if you took those numbers up to the shrine you could exchange them for prizes. Some gifts were little things like candy or boxes of tissues. But for a very lucky few you could get big blocks of fresh fish. Once I won a chunk of marinated katsuo, but somehow manage to lose the ticket before I reclaimed it.

Anyway, I remember one year when Julyan was small it was so violent that I had to give up trying to catch bean packets and take him away from the throng of very grabby old men and women. I heard the year after they had to make two different areas. One for adults and one for children. Also, this year -- the first time I've been back in over ten years -- it looks like there are no more prizes. Just 'lucky roasted beans'. Still, those obaasans and ojiisans are grabby and scary. I managed to get my hands on one packet only to have it ripped away by an old woman. Later she came to me and gave it to me. That was sweet. A teenage boy saw Richard and I were beanless and thrust whole handfuls at us, Here you go!

Another thing they do is shoot a wooden oni-ogre. That's what this video is. Members of the kyudo team looking very cool indeed. That first shot!

Setsubun: Shooting the Oni at Yaizu Shrine

February 3rd in Japan is Setsubun. It's the day children pelt oni-ogres with roasted soybeans in order to drive away bad luck. Here members of the kyudo-archery club shoot the image of a blue oni to symbolize getting rid of sickness, bad luck, and weakness.

That was fun. So no oni's for the year, then?

That they let guests be in that line right beside the firing range is terrifying!

I kid you not, but a few seconds before they started shooting, a couple of old women went under the rope and ran behind the oni. The guy on the microphone started shouting at them. Lots of nervous laughter.

there are so many things I see in Japan that make me think, "there must not be nearly as many lawyers here as in the US."

Oh man this takes me back to Kyudo Club! 💜 I was awful though. You wouldn't have wanted to stand where you were recording if it had been me shooting!

It's one of the Japanese martial arts I always wanted to do, but never did. I still think it's so freaking cool. Absolute kudos to you for doing it, even if shooting random lookers on. ^^d

That's the idea! The characters by the oni say: byouki, yowaki, tameiki (sickness, weakness, sighing). With the last 'ki' being the character for oni. So, I guess it's also getting rid of sickness, weakness, and sighing (laziness?) for the year, too.

Oh!! That is Behind the Curtain episode!! I have SoooooOOoooo many examples. I just told Richard and he's like "Oh, yea!!" Thank you for saying that. This could be a humorous and pearl clutching Behind the Curtain. I need to start jotting down things I've seen and experienced. XO
