Hey hey, everyone,

How are you all doing? It's so hard not to watch news all day and get very emotional. I need to start working on the story for the newspaper, but I thought I might put something up for those who might want to practice their Japanese listening and/or reading skills.

I've actually been wanting to get this up for quite some time. It got lost for a little bit, then Richard found the card he'd recorded it on, so we decided to finally get the audio cleaned up and MP3d.

In October 2019 I was invited to do a talk, discussion, and reading of one of my stories. The idea being I'd read a piece in Japanese and the incredibly supportive and talented Ayame-san would read the translation done by a good friend's husband, Takayuki Matsunaga.

So that's what this is, with an introduction tacked on, of course.

Here are a couple photos I took of the event  (wish I'd had taken more) as well as attachments of the part read in both English and Japanese.

The above is me, Imiri Sakabashira (pre sexy nurse's outfit) and one of the monsters he created.

Imiri-san in his outfit sketching a picture of me with Ayame-san on the floor talking to us.

Left to right: Super important elderly fellow (I forgot his name), Masao Higashi (anthologist and also super cool important fellow, came all the way from Tokyo to meet me), me, Ayame-san (that's his stage name), the musician who did strange keyboard things behind our reading.

Thanks for sharing this! It's really cool. I'm looking forward to diving deeper into it.

Thank you! I've read The Spider Sweeper in The Carp-Faced Boy and Other Tales, but it was such a treat to hear part of it in Japanese! Also, I'm a translator too, so I really appreciate the chance to compare the original English with the Japanese translation.

Uncanny Japan -- Thersa Matsuura

I didn't know you were a translator, very cool. I just love his translation and all my Japanese friends also say it's so well done. I can send the whole PDF if you'd like.

I would love to read the full PDF, thank you so much for the offer! Yes, I translate from English and Japanese into my mother tongue, Italian. If I can ever return the favor by translating something for you, just tell me! :)

I say this selfishly but I also don't want anyone to feel they are overwhelmed with too much to do, but I as a Japanese language learner would love more of these sort of offerings as a really fun and interesting support for my studies.
