I'm so freaking excited! On a whim, I went and scoured a used bookstore today. (I don't know why I haven't done this before). Well, two hours later, and holy cow.

The big discovery was a set of 26 volumes of Japanese folktales. Every book focuses on a different area of Japan, starting from up north and moving down to end in Okinawa. These are literally myths and folklore that have never been translated into English before. And the books are quite old (old style characters, old style names for areas of Japan), so that makes them even extra cool. They were a little pricey, but absolutely worth it. The entire collection of twenty-six books for around $80. So...not pricey? Quite cheap actually!

I mean these have never been told/heard in the English language (or any other language for that matter) before. I'm just as excited to read them myself as I am to get to share them with you.

Now, where to start??

This month's Bedtime Story is already finished, edited, just waiting for me to put some background to it. So we're all going to have to wait until May before we get to hear a new (old) tale from somewhere in Japan. I pulled Akita and Okinawa from the pile, so way up north and way down south, and I'm going to thumb through and I guess just go with a story that really draws me in.

Oh! On top of that I found three books on local Shizuoka folktales. So that's going to be fun, too. With that one I was thinking if they mention a place, temple, shrine or something, I could actually go there and check it out. Hello, Gimbal!

Adore you all!

Oh, I love it when that happens! That is your content sorted for the next five years ;-)

Michelle

That’s sounds incredible! What an amazing find! Can’t wait to listen to the stories once you are able to translate them :)

Craig

Looks like a source for some new art work as well?

Andy McLellan

You will be doing a great service if you make even a fraction of this material available to the non Japanese speaking world.

Amazing! I'm so excited to see/hear more of what you discover in the books!

I love such books like these. In fact, I am jealous. If I am ever around them don't turn your back on me! I don't know what I'd do! But I do look forward to hearing the stories. Such a great find.

Uncanny Japan -- Thersa Matsuura

The virus is finally reached up with Japan and even though I'm vaccinated, trying to stay home as much as possible. But, BOY! do I dream about going back there and browsing all day long. Collecting books (and pens and notebooks) is my great fault. #hoarderlevel

Collecting books is one of my major vices. 🤫

Uncanny Japan -- Thersa Matsuura

Oh, you and me both! I got books I need to give away, but I look at them and go, I ~might~ want to thumb through this again...and it stays on my shelf.
