Hey hey, beasties! (I mean the bestest beasties!)

I wanted to give a quick update. So I was working on the Bedtime Story for this month and halfway through I got on an oni kick and decided I wanted to do a retelling of Shuten Douji/酒呑童子. For anyone who doesn't know, he's one of the most infamous oni in Japan with a myriad of different versions of his story as well as lots of varying origin stories.

Shuten Douji: Think really heinous drunken ogre who does horrible things on a mountain. Will the heroes succeed in slaying him? Stay tuned...

Oh, such a deep and meandering rabbit hole Shuten Douji is. But I want to do a really good retelling (after absorbing the many variations of the story, that is) and make it sound super good, too, so that's why I'm running late into the month. I'm also thinking of doing an Uncanny Japan episode on him as well (...but you guys will get the cool story version first).

So that.

Postcards also were started and then ... ONI !! So, yeah, in honor of Setsubun (cutely called Bean Throwing Day by one of my Japanese friends), I got an oni theme going on this month. Bedtime Story, postcard, AND the next episode will delve into oni as well.

I'm also going to go grovel and postal workers' feet later and see how things are going sending envelopes to North America and Australia. Antsy there.

Okay, need to get back to our ferocious oni's story. Oh, and I liked the little ai generated oni I made up there, too. Cute.

XO,

terrie

Yay! Thanks for the wonderful update. Question for you: have you ever considered reading parts of the Kojiki or Nihon Shoki on the show? I’d love to hear you read and/or react to the stories.

It'd be interesting to see what you can dig up on Ibaraki-douji too! As an aside, I've been catching up on episodes (your feed was glitchy for me for quite some time, I eventually deleted everything in my podcast player and started over from a fresh resubscription), and one of the episodes you said you'd like suggestions for episodes etc. So a quick list: - Japanese "ribbon corner" portraits - These are head-and-shoulders portraits that have the two top corners marked by a diagonal line or ribbon on the frame. They're apparently common enough that they can be used as direct visual shorthand for "this character is dead" in manga/anime, but English info on them and their history seems to be nonexistent - Hasshaku-sama - Lady Eight-Shaku / Miss-Eight-Feet-Tall - I don't think you've covered this one before. It's an interesting, relatively recent urban legend that's apparently quite popular over there, about an incredibly tall spirit woman who wears a white sundress and a broad-brimmed straw hat, likes to repeat the syllable 'po po po' and has a reputation for child abduction. Could be a companion piece to your slashed-mouth woman episode - Shikigami and their use and myth throughout history And since you also said to remind you of any episode ideas or things mentioned to you before: - Menreiki 面霊気 - The unusual tsukumogami made up of an entire swarm of drama masks - Jinmensou 人面瘡 - The human-faced tumor that appears on your body and demands to be fed rice

I'm still rather confused as to what a "mallet-headed sword" could be.

I'm so sorry about the feed being glitchy. Thank you for all the suggestions!! Yes, Ibaraki-Douji makes an appearance in the Shuten Douji story (but not in all versions) and I was just thinking I needed to do a whole episode on just him or here as the case may be. I do have Menreiki written down when you suggested earlier and need to dig a little more. The Jinmensou sounds like such a hoot. Lots of good ideas, jotting them down!
