Richard is revamping my author website for next spring's book launch and as allergic as I am to photos of myself at anytime anywhere, the above one popped up from a couple years ago, and thought I'd share. *Deep breath*

Okay, so I've decided that I want to seriously look for some affiliate markets to work with on the UJ podcast. This living hand to mouth is getting a bit scary. I'm getting a bit old as well. I have two aging parents -- Richard has one -- and it would be great to have some savings in case we have to make an emergency trip back home. The yen is crap and ticket prices are the highest i've ever seen them in thirty years. Also, I really do want to make little road trips and bigger road trips to find more stories and interesting anything to write about and share with you all. Oh, ironically enough we both need new glasses 😆, too. My favorite computer glasses broke the day before Hokkaido and Richard's had a lens pop out while there.

I'm just not very good at this monetizing thing. Talk about allergy.

iHeart has approached me again wanting to talk. And again I have a little bit of an idea what an offer from them might look like (my friend has a podcast on an iHeart imprint and it's holy shit! money). Problem: they own all your IP AND they just inundate your show with ads that you have no control over. At least that's my friend's deal. Richard said the first three minutes of an iHeart show is nothing but ads.

My gut is screaming, "No! Don't do it!"

But in order not to do it, I need to put on my big girl (let's use) hachimaki and learn how to find really good and beneficial-to-my-listeners businesses to work with. I took the first step (*gasp*) and signed up for a course on how to do affiliate marketing and am now working my way through that.

So, first thing, you all (patrons) are golden. Once I do find a sponsor or someone to run ads on the show, I'll put up a completely ad free version here. So no worries there. You'll get episodes add free 👍

The "huge favor" then is I'm at the part of the course where I need to brainstorm ideas that listeners might be interested in and companies I might be able to reach out to and see if we can work together. At this point, it's just to gather things listeners want (to find, use, learn from, etc.) AND make a big ol' list of companies that offer such things.

From those I've chatted with and gotten to know, I came up with these general areas of interest:

1. Travel (tours, cruises, particular places to stay that offer neat perks... more?)

2. Language (online courses, in person courses, books, tutors...more?)

3. Food and Snacks (monthly boxes, places that sell and ship specialty Japanese items... more?)

4. Buddhism and Shinto ... (I know there is quite a bit of interest here, so maybe courses or books? Religious items, like statues or what not?)

Does the above look alright? Can anything else be added?

🌟But then the big question: is there anything you're using or have used that is Japan-related that you really love or like (or don't like for that matter)? Perhaps a company I can approach. Or something you're interested in but aren't sure about? Again, I can reach out and see if they'll let me try out whatever it is to give you and other listeners insight into what it's like.🌟

I'm Googling around myself, of course, and making my lists but keep getting overwhelmed. The idea is to get as many ideas as possible, then do some sifting, then email and try, if at all possible, to find something listeners of the show might get some nice benefit out of.

If you'd like to help you can comment or send a message or email at uncannyjapan(at)gmail.com. Anything is fine and I appreciate your help so much. Even asking for it is out of my comfort zone, actually contacting businesses and working with them I can't yet imagine. But I'm wearing that big girl hachimaki, dangit, and I want to try ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ.

Thank you so much, XO,

(^O^☆♪

So I typed a whole, long post, when to check something in another tab, and it got deleted. *Sigh* tl;dr time, I suppose. In terms of snack box sponsors, we can speak for TokyoTreat/Sakuraco. We just finished a year subscription I got Jenn for her birthday, and each TokyoTreat box was both plentiful and diverse - it wasn't JUST KitKats and potato chips. Heck, we even got to try a few things we probably would've never had a chance to otherwise and really enjoyed it. Good stuff! The other random idea my jetlag-addled brain had was: do local tourism boards ever do sponsorships? Say, for instance, you wanted to take a trip to a specific town/region to do research and/or an episode on a specific site/topic/story. I wonder, if you agreed to do a plug for that area to help increase tourist visibility at all through a blurb/social media post/YouTube video/etc, whether they'd be willing to, at the very least, sponsor that episode. Just a thought. Either way, 頑張ってね, Terrie and Rich! 💪🏻 You've got this!

Nice photo! I don't know if anyone has mentioned Japanese crafts before, but if there are companies that have little kits to do traditional crafts, hey I'd be into that!

So sorry about the disappearing post. That happens to me a lot. Thank you! I'm writing all this down. I like the idea about increasing tourist visibility to certain areas. I feel that there would be interest in that. Something to look into. Glad to hear you made in home safe and sound and I'm guessing filled with wonderful images, experiences, and memories 💕

I can understand this is a huge decision and not one to be taken lightly. But you and Rich deserve to be properly compensated for your work and have the money to be able to see family and go on road trips. My worry, I guess, which you have doubtless already considered, is that ads will lead to fewer listeners, which would be a shame. Those of us on Patreon are hardcore enough to listen through three minutes of ads but I am not so sure about casual listeners.

Andy McLellan

I love Suzy's idea of traditional crafts. Also stores that sell Japanese craft supplies that can be hard to find outside of Japan for shodo etc. Likewise there are things like hanko name stamps. For me, being able to source Japanese Buddhist items would be great. I know some Japanese websites but if there is no English translation it is a struggle. For Shinto, the health/wealth/good luck amulets might well sell.

Mostly, I wish you all good luck when it comes to this endeavour and know that you and Rich can make it work. Btw, cute photo too! Everyone likes a smiling author! (sorry for multiple comments, Patreon seemed to trim for length)

I have this fantasy about Uncanny Japan-themed tours and cruises, like how the History of Rome podcaster did a few European tours. I'd honestly be up for any of the things you mentioned--food, language, music, travel--anything that helps me learn more (and brings you money!) There are probably very legit reasons it'd be unwise to talk about negotiations with other networks, but I've always thought you'd be a perfect fit thematically with Grim & Mild, the folks who do the Lore podcast.

Images, experiences, memories... and an intense desire from both of us to go back again~! ;-) That said, this topic of monetization is actual an interest of mine, so if I happen to think of anything else that might be of interest/helpful to you, I'll definitely let you know!

I have one item from Montbell that I take everywhere with me--travel chopsticks! I wonder if they'd be willing to sponsor? I'll let you know if anything else comes to mind.

You might try Bokksu. It's a Japanese company that sell subscription boxes of Japanese snacks. I subscribed to them for years. https://www.bokksu.com/ I wouldn't worry too much about ads. Youtube is just chock full of ads and the vast majority of people put up with it instead of paying for Youtube Premium. Also a number of podcasts I listen to have a combination of ads and ad-free subscriptions. Again, their listeners prefer to hear ads rather than to pay, but paying users are enough to make a large contribution.

Thank you so much for the kind words and encouragement. Patrons will definitely get ad free versions available to them, and I'm thinking of on one per show and I *really* playing with the idea of making the ad not only informative, but fun! This probably won't even get started until next year. I'm planning waaay in advance 😅 Me, too, love Suzy's idea and oh my gosh, yes, shodo supplies or courses even, hanko stamps. About eight years ago Richard and I had the idea to make hanko for people, but to choose funny kanji for their names. Let them know what it meant of course, but something silly and different. I even bought a handful of stones and tools to carve... I still have them. 🤪 So many ideas...so few seen through. I'm personally very interested in offering Buddhist and Shinto related help in any way I can. I love you're idea about terms. Speaking of that! I have some blog posts I've started (for here) but haven't posted yet that are Buddhist phrases and the post is me explaining what they mean and then what the characters mean and any nuances to them. I thinkI have two or three in draft form. I'll post one this Sunday. Thank you for all the great ideas ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡

Uncanny Japan -- Thersa Matsuura

Oh, BRIAN! You just unlocked BIG DREAM there! I love it. And I'm in for it! Let me start researching and dreaming. I think...that would be incredibly fun, challenging, and doable! Thank you!! (^O^☆♪

Uncanny Japan -- Thersa Matsuura

Yes! These kind of treasures. I'm so out of the loop, what people can get and not get. I love travel chopsticks...then there are cool obento bako. They have the most gorgeous handmade and lacquer ones here. Great ideas!

Uncanny Japan -- Thersa Matsuura

I've heard of Bokksu! I think that's what also nudged me. I don't subscribe to Youtube Premium and I'm just now used to "Speaking skills. Why don't you try Skillshare?" Richard and I have the most adorablest idea for ads, too. I don't want to annoy people, more help them. Thank you~~🙏

Brad Thornborrow

Hey, you need to take care of number one first, but not by giving away all your rights to some other company like iHeart. This may seem like a crazy idea, but how about a larger company like JAL? My dream one day is to actually get to Japan, so I'd bet travel is on the menu for many of your listeners...

Uncanny Japan -- Thersa Matsuura

Absolutely! And that's something I haven't thought of either. Thank you and I'm going to look into that as well. Everything feels like a scary adventure -- not knowing what I don't know and all. I just found out there are cruises that hit major ports around Japan. I had no idea! At first glance, I'd like to stop by those ports and do some exploring myself. JAL sounds very good to look into. Thank you, Brad (^_−)−☆

Just came by to say there's no need to apologise for having to make a living. For sponsers, you might consider Japanese homegoods stores like Minimaru that we have here in Australia. I've also seen Buddhist temples on youtube which cater to a foreign market with mini holidays and experiences. Audible also seems to be a popular sponser. I think those types of services would fit your theme very well.

Hi Terry, I'm a Brand Manager for Video games and affiliate & co-marketing are my job. I'm happy to help, chat, Coach in any way. I hope you didn't pay too much for the course - most of them I've seen aren't that great, or let's say: nothing I couldn't have taught you for free. But maybe I'm totally wrong and this course you find is just amazing! I hope it has value for you. Still, happy to (voice) chat on discord anytime. I wouldn't recommend selling your IP - it's usually a bad deal. And with the heart and soul you put into UJ it would most likely make you very unhappy. In terms of sponsors - bokksu, Tokyo treat/sakuraco have already been mentioned and I would recommend reaching out to them as well. But maybe your channel is too small for them, idk. I don't know your numbers, actually! When it comes to export japanese goods a small but potential partner could be tabis-online.jp - I will look for more.

Uncanny Japan -- Thersa Matsuura

Thank you, Amanda 🙏 I'm taking notes! I didn't know about the Buddhist temples offering mini holidays and experiences. I'm interested that as well!

Uncanny Japan -- Thersa Matsuura

Woah! Alexej! I guess the course wasn't *too* much. I actually reached out to a couple places earlier in the year and last year and somehow ended up ruining them. Somehow. I don't know. I think my download numbers are decent (after googling around to find out what decent is). I'll share!

A little late here, but first of all- no one is going to stop listening because you have ads. We’re already getting a wonderful product for free, we can listen to a couple ads. :) also, just to second because I think I saw mentioned before- we recently got the autumn moon viewing themed Sakuraco box and really liked it! The snacks are tasty, the info in the booklet is informative, and I love the little plate with a bunny we got. If you want any pictures of what came (that we didn’t eat yet haha) let me know! :)

Gina Carter

Also, no idea if they sponsor anyone but we have a Japanese super market/shopping complex up in New Jersey called Mitsuwa that would be on theme. There’s also a Kinokuniya book store and a Daiso, both Japanese stores that have a growing US presence from what I know. IDK if they sponsor but hey, can’t hurt to ask :)

Rhea

I second Gina's ideas and thoughts. I'd be happy to listen to a few ads to hear your work. Also, I'm not sure exactly how others found you. But I found your work through my interests in Japan, myths, legends, and horror. So if there is a way to get books/bookstores and film(s), it would be a amazing!
