Excuse the video quality. It's shaky and the microphone is the one on the camera, so not good at all. But I really wasn't expecting to do anything except take a couple snaps for the blog and social media. Then Richard and I get a little more than half way through and this squalling yowling sound starts up. We look at each other, don't say anything and look back in the direction it was coming from. Richard was already recording on his phone. Yes, should have been binaural microphones. Boy was it funny when we get there and I asked if he'd checked the equipment and, um, oops, we'd left them on the table. I just hit video-record on my camera and this is what I took. If you listen carefully at certain points, you can hear the tortured cries from some hellish creature. Or an animal. Only I can't think of what animal this could be.Guesses?

Creepy Sounds from the Haunted Meiji Tunnel

We went to the Meiji Tunnel to record some ambient sounds for the background of Episode 134 of Uncanny Japan: Haunted Tunnels in Japan. Halfway through the creepy tunnel we both heard a really eerie crying or yowling sound. The audio is really crap. Definitely not a pigeon. Got loads of them near us. Feral cat? Fox? Feral cat and fox hooking up?

My guess, too. At one point it makes a "kon kon" sound. In Japan the sound a fox makes is "kon kon" so that's my educated guess. Foxes can also make unearthly creepy cries. That adds up, too.
