I figure part of the review process for hiring people is a background check that figures out if they would be bothered by it.

Yes, but it would be more apt to say that the country as a whole has taken a swing toward being more highly sexualized. Appletree itself IS a bit extreme, thanks largely to [redacted], but the country as a whole is filled with innuendo as well. Slightly different parallel universe + 14 years for a new wave of marketing and social norms to happen. :)
