Chapter 700: Unceremonious goodbye.

If I had received that text any other night, it could have very well woken me up and prevented me from going back to sleep. Fernanda sending me a picture of herself masturbating was NOT on my list of things to expect from her. On top of that…

Tell me when’s the earliest you can meet. I… need to see you.

She NEEDED to see me? Can you blame my heart from beating like crazy?

Thankfully, I already had trouble falling asleep and had completely given up on it. It was weird because I normally sleep really soundly after having sex, and the past two days had a lot of that. But considering what I’d be doing tomorrow… I was restless.

I decided against texting Fernanda immediately, not wanting to ruin her mood by telling her I couldn’t see her tomorrow. After all… I was finally moving out of my mom’s house.

My house was ready. All tiles set, all walls painted and every piece of furniture assembled. And just a couple of days before we started university, too. It’s still hard to believe how fast they worked, and I think that’s part of the reason I felt so restless. It felt like no time had passed since we made the decision to move in together and the house being finished. I kept a close eye on the progress, but it still hit me out of nowhere.

I couldn’t sleep. Leaving this house, this room, my family… I didn’t think it’d feel so heavy, but now that the time arrived, I felt… uncomfortable, anxious. It was about 2:30 am and the one sleeping soundly at the foot of my bed was Cake. I had… told her we’d be moving out, but of course she didn’t understand. She’s a cat, no matter how much it looks like she understands human speech. Either that or she doesn’t care either way.

I got another text not long after and got excited that it might be another picture, only to be sorely disappointed when it turned out to be my sister asking if I was awake. I sighed, smiled and answered that I was.

She came into my room a moment later, wearing long pajama pants and an old T-shirt.

“You should be sleeping,” I told her, sitting up on my bed.

“...Wanna play some games?” she asked me.

“...” I held back a chuckle. “Sure.”

Isabelle turned on my PC and the two of us sat on the bed with controllers in hand. A new kart racing game had come out recently, so we played that because it had some amount of randomness to it that I wouldn’t absolutely destroy her.

For about a full hour we just… played the game and talked only about it.

“Someone sent me an e-mail asking me to edit a highlight video of them playing this game, but since I’m not familiar with it I haven’t answered yet. It’s fun, so maybe I will.”

“Is it really that important that you know the game?” I asked her.

“You miss the funny and impressive moment if you don’t,” she said. “It’s why I don’t edit a lot of game footage, but more people are asking me to do that, so maybe I should get back to playing more games.”

“You’d be able to edit more for Noelle that way.”

“I’d love to, but she has editors in the company, right?”

“I bet she could tell them she’s working with someone and having them pay you.”

“That’d be nice. It might be more stable, but I’d feel guilty asking her about it. I don’t want her to feel like she has to hire me just because we’re friends.”

“Yeah, I get that.”

“...”

“...”

“So what are we going to do with the channel?” she asked me.

“I can still record and send you the footage. And for more elaborate stuff you can always drop by. You’re always welcome.”

“You’re too far away.”

“It’s an hour at most, and that’s if you run into traffic. Going downtown by bus is already 40 minutes and you go all the time.”

“Yeah, but your house is in the middle of nowhere, so it feels like it’s farther away.”

“That’s true.”

“I’ll drop by every once in a while. When I’m not busy. Will you come back to visit, though?”

“Yeah, but our aunt is going to be using my bedroom soon, so it’ll only be for the day.”

“Right, I’d almost forgotten.”

“How do you feel about that, by the way?”

“I like auntie. And she’s always been the type to help around the house, so it’s not like she’ll be a bother in the slightest. In fact, she’ll help more than you ever did.”

“Yeah, probably,” I said with a chuckle.

“The girls are all ready, then? I asked Alice and she said she has everything packed, but Noelle was still putting everything in boxes when I called her at 8:00 pm.”

“I bet she’s STILL putting everything in boxes,” I said.

“Likely. Her room was full of stuff. No one getting cold feet or parents changing their opinions at the last minute?”

I shook my head. “No, everything’s going well. Why? Do you want something to go wrong?”

“Of course not. I can’t wait to have you out of this house.”

“...”

“...”

We kept our eyes on the screen and kept playing, even as Isabelle started to sob. I caught a few tears rolling down her cheeks, but since she didn’t pause the game, neither did I. We kept playing for about 40 more minutes until Isabelle finally had enough.

“I’m tired. I’m going to bed,” she said, standing up.

I nodded. “Good night, sis.”

“Good night, brother.” She leaned in and kissed my cheek before going back to her room.

I threw myself back on the bed and sighed.

“Really, just as things went back to normal, I grab my stuff and leave…” I muttered to myself. “Sorry, sis… but I’m going ahead.”

Chapter 701: Moving out.

Thomas wanted to repay the favor he owed me and offered to help me move my things, but I really only had like 5 boxes for clothes and other stuff like my PC. That and my instruments. All my furniture was staying at mom’s house because I didn’t need it. I told Thomas he could repay me by helping us move the girls’ stuff into the house and that’s where he hesitated. Mila said she had like 10 boxes of only clothes. Still, he sucked it up and even brought the other guys to help.

I texted Fernanda early in the morning to tell her I had something important to do, so I could probably see her on Tuesday. She texted back saying that worked for her.

Thomas, Ben, Kevin and Mark helped me load the van with my things while I said goodbye to mom and Isabelle.

“Be sure to keep everything neat and in order,” mom told me. “The house is big, but there’s seven people in it. If they’re not willing to clean, call me. I’ll give them a talking to, but you do your part as well.”

I chuckled. “Six people. You know Diana isn’t actually moving in with us, right?”

“Yeah, sure.” Not even mom believed she’d last long, huh?

“But yes, we talked about it. We’ll put in the work,” I told her.

“Do you know how long it’ll take you to get to your university from home?” she asked.

I nodded. “About 40 minutes in the morning, a little more in the afternoon. Not too different from what it would’ve been if I was commuting from here.”

“You’ll continue working at the hotel, right?” Isabelle asked me.

“Yeah, of course.”

I kneeled and picked up Cake’s carrier with her inside, lifting it up to mom’s eye level.

“I hope she doesn’t have too hard a time adjusting,” mom said, putting her finger against the mesh for Cake to sniff.

“I’m worried, too. If worse comes to worse… I’ll bring her back here.”

“I don’t think she’ll have trouble,” Isabelle said. “Maybe at first, but she’ll get used to it.”

“I hope so.”

Mom sighed. “Are you sure you don’t need our help?”

I smiled “I’m sure. Everything’s set up already. We’ll probably spend the day fixing our rooms, the kitchen, the living spaces, things like that. Like you said, there’ll be seven of us.”

“I thought Diana wasn’t moving in,” Isabelle said.

“She’s still going to help.”

“Alright then. Take care of yourselves, okay? Work hard, eat well, rest plenty. If you need anything, just call me,” mom said.

“Thanks.”

She hugged me and I hugged her back. She held me tightly, taking a deep breath, but didn’t say anything else. It was the same with Isabelle. We hugged, but we’d kind of had our goodbye that previous night, so we didn’t say anything else.

I took Cake to the van, put her in the back with Ben, Kevin and Mark and was ready to get on the driver seat, but Thomas stopped me.

“Want me to drive?” he offered.

“...” I sighed. “You know what? Yeah.”

Thomas got in the driver seat and I rode shotgun. I watched my mother, my sister and my old house get further and further away. It’s not like I believed I wouldn’t feel anything, but I didn’t think it’d hurt.

“You okay, Oliver?” Kevin asked me after noticing the silence in the van.

“Yeah. Just… It’s a bit sad, that's all.”

He sighed. “I bet.”

“Thanks for coming to help, though,” I told the guys. “You better be ready to carry lots of stuff. The girls are bringing more than I am.”

“It’s why we came,” Mark said. “I bet Grace is bringing her entire library.”

“Only what’s hers, but yeah.”

“Sorry, but it’s still funny to me that you’re moving into your own playboy mansion," Thomas said. “Will you start walking around in a cool robe?”

“I’m considering it. Either that or just boxers.”

“And that’s our queue to remember to call before visiting,” Ben said.

“Correct,” I told him.

Some 30 minutes later we arrived at the house. We were the first. They had also finished installing the tall metal fence and the electric gate. I used the remote to open it and the van followed the short dirt road to the garage to park in front of it.

I had talked to Mr. Moore, the architect in charge, the day before and he had officially given me the keys to the house. There was no construction equipment left, no holes or piles of dirt, no leftover materials. Only the finished, three story house and perfect, green grass.

“Um… Should we start?” Kevin asked, and I was thankful he did.

“It’d feel wrong not to wait for the others,” I said. “Do you guys want to go see the pool and the backyard?”

“Yeah. Do you have the space to have a barbeque?” Thomas asked me.

“If there’s anything we aren’t lacking, it’s space.”

We walked through the space between the house and the garage and reached the indoor pool. Sarah’s indoor pool, to be precise. This was her request. You could see the inside thanks to the glass walls, just like the one she had at her house, only here both the room and the pool were rectangular.

Right in front of the double doors was an area of smooth concrete flooring with a long glass table and metal legs and 10 white chairs around it.

“Oh, so you were already thinking about barbecues,” Ben said, grinning.

“Sarah was,” I told him. “She wanted to have a place to play outside. We considered putting a basketball hoop over here, too, but cut the idea for budget reasons.”

“Oh, come on…” Thomas and Kevin whined at the same time.

“Dude, it’s not your house…” Mark told them.

“Yeah, but still!” Thomas said.

I got a text and checked my phone immediately. Speaking of, it was Sarah with a quick voice message saying she was close to the house, so I went to open the gate for her.

She came in in her SUV, parked next to my van and came out looking… serious. I approached to ask what happened, but the moment she threw herself at me and hugged me, I understood.

Sarah cried softly into my chest, and all I could do was hold her and be there for her. If leaving my house was hard, it was doubly or triply so for Sarah. I kissed the top of her head and caressed her back, letting her cry all she needed to.

700 hundred chapters now... It's still very conflicting for me. On the one hand, I'm really having a lot of fun writing this story. I wouldn't say it's easy, but I'm still not running out of ideas and still have things I want to do. Situations ofr the group to tackle and even personal stuff now that everyone's going to be having seperate classes and stuff. On the other hand, I'm always afraid to be stuck doing one thing. It part of the reason I ended The Affection Multiplier back then. I didn't want to do a single thing for too long and stagnate my skills. I feel like writing The Book of Eros, as conflicting as that story is for me, helped me a lot to understand the slice of life genre and my own style of writing. And now here we are, 700 chapters in. Something inside me tells me I should finish this and start something new, but I don't want to stop yet. I'm not done here. Besides, while I have ideas for other projects, I have nothing concrete in mind, so if you're hoping this story continues, then there's nothing to worry about. I'm looking towards the end, but we're not quite there yet. Happy holidays everybody. I hope you all had a good time and here's to a better new year. Best wishes from this random internet dude.

Great work as always, can't wait to see more stuff about the house and the follow up with Fern!

I actually took a while to post these chapters because I was finishing up building the house, thinking I'd need the screen shots for this chapter, but it turns out I'll show them in the next. That said, I'm not particularly creative when it comes to interior design (or design in general), so while I like some parts, other are... not great. I hope it's at least decent, though.

I would love for this story to continue till it reaches a good end, I wanna see more of Oliver's life. If we do reach the ending of this story at some point, I hope we can get a peak into his Future years down the road, maybe after having kids with all the girls and maybe a Wedding between Thomas and Maria. These characters will always hold a special place in my heart.

This chapter hit close to home. Today's my last day of break before my last year of grad school and that officially means moving out permanently from my childhood home. I really loved your David Walker Branch but you've improved so much with this story. Its wild seeing these character take this major step

Discede Ad Dominum

Omg, my second reading through and there are so many sections I find myself tearing up from the interactions and dialogue. The piece here with Oliver and his sister just hits the emotions so hard. Such a great job in your writing. You are showing me the kind of writing I want to strive to achieve. Will probably be rereading this again.

Thank you. Subtext and subtlety are things I really apreciate in writing but it's a tricky thing to get right. A lot of the time I'm not sure I'm being clear enough while avoiding outright saying what is happening. Even if what people get from it were to be different to my intent, I would still rather they connect the dots on their own because it feel a lot better than being told about it.
