Can an Actor access another Actors phone? How much control do we have as GM's?

The Glitch Smith

That's an excellent question, and it gets right to the heart of what makes the module a powerful storytelling tool! Let me break it down for you. 1. Can an Actor access another Actor's phone? Yes, absolutely! This is one of the core features for plot and story. You can set this up by making the smartphone a physical Item in the game. Here's how it works: As a GM, you can create an item (e.g., "Dataphone") and designate it as a "Phone Template." When an Actor gets this item, it becomes a unique, working phone. If that Actor drops the item, is pickpocketed, or gives it to someone else, the new owner gets the item and gains full access to that phone—including all its message history, contacts, and call logs. It's perfect for investigations or infiltration scenarios! 2. How much control do we have as GMs? You have complete administrative control over the entire system. You can: Create, Delete, and Reassign Phones: Use the in-app Device Management screen to give phones to any actor (PC or NPC), change who owns a phone, or delete them entirely. Design the World's Systems: You have dedicated settings panels to create the phone number formats, build the entire banking and currency system, control which apps are available in the App Store, and even design your own Gacha prize pools. Manipulate Time & Environment: Through the Calendar app, you can advance in-game time and even link it to the automatic time-of-day lighting system. And great timing! I've just created a comprehensive wiki that covers all of this (and more) in detail. It will walk you through how to set up item-based phones and all the other GM tools. You can find the link in my latest Patreon post!

Awesome. looks super polished

The Glitch Smith

Awesome, thank you! I'm happy you think so. Let me know if you have any feedback or suggestions once you've had a chance to try it out!

Tragic

Hey, Glitch Smith. Fantastic module, however I noticed that when running it with the Starfinder game systems it prevents me (the GM) from opening character sheets or even the ESC menu. When attempting to do so, it pops up with an error in the F12 Dev screen. I've tried it in both the GM perspective and in player perspective and it acts the same. Hope this gets sorted soon! Love the idea! Update: I figured out that a blank character sheet works just fine. However, the moment I add a feat of any kind to the sheet, the whole sheet breaks and can't be re-opened. I hope this helps when trying to detect the issue. If you need the error codes or anything from me, please let me know.

The Glitch Smith

Hi Tragic, Thank you so much for reporting this issue and for providing the detailed update! I really appreciate you taking the time to investigate further. That information is incredibly helpful for diagnosing the problem. I wasn't aware of this specific incompatibility with the Starfinder system, and I'll definitely look into it. System compatibility is important, so I'll investigate this as soon as possible. Also, if you're on Discord, feel free to join our server https://discord.gg/S24yf8PC. Discussing the specifics there might help expedite the investigation. Thanks again for bringing this to my attention and for your support!

Tragic

Sounds like a plan! Thanks for the speedy response!

The Glitch Smith

Hi Tragic, Following up on your previous report about the Starfinder incompatibility – thank you again for bringing it to my attention! I'm happy to let you know that this issue should now be resolved in the latest update (version 1.0.9.2). Thanks again for your support and patience!

Jack Vorfale

That's exactly what I needed, thank you! But now I'm looking forward to new features (gallery, camera, browser, music player, etc.) and polishing up the old ones. But it's still perfect. By the way, your Discord link has expired.

The Glitch Smith

Thank you so much for the wonderful feedback and your support on Patreon, Jack! I'm thrilled to hear the module is exactly what you needed and that you find it perfect. It's great to know you're excited about potential future features like a gallery, camera, browser, and music player, as well as polishing the existing ones. Those are definitely interesting ideas for the long term! And a huge thank you for letting me know about the expired Discord link! I really appreciate you pointing that out. Here's the updated link: https://discord.gg/betZuyMQ2r Thanks again for your support and feedback!

This is a really neat mod! Like, mindblowingly awesome! I have a couple of questions: Is it possible to have a "withhold number" option when making phone calls? I play games that involve spycraft and such where receiving anonymous calls happens fairly often. Alternatively, allow for manually entering a number without the structure/character restrictions. Is it possible to add an option to have the 'Home' bar always displayed, as we find the swiping up a bit frustrating. Finally, is there any way to integrate the time/calendar with Simple Timekeeping or Small Time modules, or alternately create a separate widget for controlling the time/date (similar to Simple Timekeeping or Small Time modules)?

The Glitch Smith

Wow, thank you for the amazing feedback! "Mindblowingly awesome" is high praise indeed! I'm so glad you like the module and I'm happy to answer your questions. 1. Anonymous Calls: You're right, that's a fantastic idea, especially for spycraft games. The ability to make an "Anonymous Call" or "Withhold Number" makes perfect sense. I will definitely work on adding that feature in a future update! 2. Always-On Home Bar: I understand the swipe-up gesture isn't for everyone. I'll consider adding an option for an always-visible navigation bar. My main concern is ensuring it doesn't obstruct important parts of some app screens, but I will look into it carefully as an optional setting. 3. Time/Calendar Control: Direct integration with modules like Simple Calendar is tricky because the smartphone uses its own internal, customizable world time system (`SmartphoneTime.js`). However, your alternative idea (a separate GM widget to control the time) is fantastic! That's definitely on my list of features to explore for a future update. For any other feedback or real-time support, please feel free to join the Discord! It's often easier to troubleshoot issues there: https://discord.gg/KKXrkJCPMj Thanks again for the excellent feedback!

Hello, how do I know which version is the Stable one an which version is available only for Early Access?

The Glitch Smith

Hello Max, that's a great question! I've just adjusted the package names to make this clearer. First, the package now named Smartphone Widget (legacy) is the old, obsolete version. (This was previously named ...Early Access Beta). It's no longer used and will be deleted soon once I'm sure everyone has migrated. You can safely ignore this one. Smartphone Widget: This is the main Core Module that everyone needs. This is the stable version. Smartphone Widget: Scanner App: This is the new Add-on Module. This is one of the new add-ons being released early for Early Access patrons. So, to get all the current content, you should install both the main Smartphone Widget module and the Smartphone Widget: Scanner App add-on.

Thank you for clarifying!

I loved this module! Is it possible to make it so that the Storyteller gets a notification when players send a message to any NPC, or call them, without us needing to be with that NPC's specific phone open?

The Glitch Smith

Glad you’re enjoying the module! To see all messages from your players, you can select the 'Master Phone' in the device selection menu. The Master Phone allows you to monitor all incoming and outgoing messages across the world without having to open each NPC's specific phone. Regarding call notifications, that feature isn't available yet, but I'll definitely consider adding it in a future update. Thanks for the feedback!

Kalyskah

Ahh I see! I missed it then! I'm using that system where the messages go private instead of being displayed in the main chat, so Players can make their subplots in the background with NPCs, and having a notification system where I could quickly know when they are messaging someone, or be able to "awenser to calls" without needing to move to the phone of the specific NPC they are calling would be a great feature for this. Another thing that I noticed is that I couldn't add a character to a group chat after the group was created. Maybe I missed where it was, but it would be a great feature for long games where new players come to play as the story progresses and we can just add and remove them from the group chat just like an message app.
