Last of Us S2E02 Watch Along

Ready to cry (for the second time) along with you guys when I get home from work!

unfortunately im one of the "bounce off"ers and stems from the game, It felt so rushed in the game and it was not what i bought the game for. I really couldn't enjoy myself playing it after. same reason ive only watched the first season but have not really any interest in this season, had to check out how they adapted it though

The big fight in Jackson didn't happen in the game. In the game Tommy and Joel were on patrol together and Dina and Ellie went out together on patrol as well. The whole Jackson fight was done for the show and they switched Up Dina for Tommy as Joel's patrol partner. That one change made for some really cool TV! And it gives Dina more reason to go to Seattle with Ellie.

I played the game when it came out and It was really hard to get behind Abby when the switch happened. What helped me was when I realized that Abby finishes her revenge story when this one starts and when she gets there she is every bit the monster Joel was at his peak before he met Ellie and her progression through the Last of Us 2 is (not a 1:1) essentially Joel's in Part/Season 1.

And I also agree it that this episode should have been the finale of the season. They could have built up Abby to be the villain for Ellie to pursue in S2 while also giving the audience a little more understanding into Abby's group and cycle of violence that Abbey is currently in and will eventually pass on to Ellie.

Owen is in love with her. Manny likes it. And Mel and Nora are too timid to do anything. What do you want them to do?

You know how much filler they would have had to insert to drag this to the end of the season? It’s better here, no one expects it this early.

It’s also not a revenge story. I don’t want to get into anything spoilery, but people who bounced off wanted more exciting adventures with Joel and Ellie, but that’s not what this is. I don’t think people are used to being challenged by art like this You actually know much less at this point in the game. You know way more of Abby’s motivations in the show at this point. And changing things cause the audience likes your show ain’t it. I’m proud of Druckmann and Maizen for sticking to their guns and putting their balls out there. Not making a bold narrative choice cause you’re scared some people don’t like it is weak. They also clearly aren’t structuring the narrative the same way as the game. There are scenes in the trailer from after the split you all are referencing

Skallywag

There would be some filler for sure, but they could make most of it from all of the flashback from the game. The trailers showed we're getting them anyway. You could probably even keep some of them as flashbacks that Joel looks back on while in therapy. It would take some doing, but it could have been done.

I wasn't expecting it to happen this soon, either. Thought for sure they'd save it for either the finale, or the penultimate ep. Either way, it indeed was a damn fine episode of tv. As far as "non gamers" or casual watchers bouncing after this episode, I can see it happening.. but I feel like most will buy in, to see how Ellie deals with the situation. I know losing Pedro Pascal (Joel) is a big deal, and might drive (no pun intended!) people away, but I think it's a strong enough plot point to keep most people hooked. As always, great reaction fellas, and have a safe trip!

As someone who's never played the games, only watched bits of someone else streaming them, I loved the first season of this show and loving this season too, but the loss of Joel definitely didn't impact me as much as a lot of people that have played the games. I can't remember how most of Part 2 actually goes either and that may be a good thing going in to the rest of the season. I would expect to see flashback scenes at the very least as Joel was such a big part of Ellie's life, but now interested to see the evolution or devolution of Ellie over time. I rate this episode a Joel in One. Hope you both have a great time away in Spain, looking forward to watching the rest of this series and also Andor that is upcoming with you guys. Safe travels!

Well that was a choice. I’ve never played or seen the game played so I am not precious about it. I’ll still finish watching, just a shame our Zaddy won’t be there anymore.

Love y'all & as someone who loved both games, I would suggest leaning into the uncomfortable nature of this second story. Most criticism I've seen from the story is as you put: I want to see a certain thing happen and feel a certain way, and I feel betrayed I didn't get that. And to be fair, that is exactly what does happen. You do get a LOT of your "fun" revengey feelings, but later on, it doesn't feel so "good" like you want it to, and that's sort of the point. I think it is a disservice to Druckmann to say the story isn't good (as I've often seen), just because it doesn't feel "satisfying". That uncomfortable/dissatisfied feeling is such an interesting way to tell a story about a subject we've become accustomed to feeling good or justified in - revenge. I'm super interested to see how they adapt that feeling throughout the season, as I think the biggest takeaway from both of the first episodes for me is sitting in that tension or "uncomfortability". Hope it gets better for y'all!

The viewers that didn't play the game just need to leave after this episode. This show is not for you. Goes the same for those who played and did not like how the game played out, BYE!!!

Cassie M

Exactly, choosing to not watch anymore just because a beloved actor/character got killed is plain stupid.

As someone who writes and values the creative expression and communciation of fiction writing I can't say how much it frustrates me to see people expecting to a story to be what they want it to be instead of what it needs to be to tell the story it intends to be. In the end no one has to like it that way, but I think it's important to always take a step back and try to think about why the story is what it is. I don't even know if I agree 100% with some of what the game seems to be saying but I value it for the journey, the characters, and the way it made me think about its themes. I admire the creators for being willing to commit to what viewers and gamers often say they want - immersion, truly using the storytelling and mediums to make us feel what the player character is feeling.

As a casual watcher, I do feel like I’m not sure if I want to keep watching this but I’m not a quitter so I will. It does leave the feeling of now I want Ellie to get vongonce so I’ll at least be watching for that too. Live the react as always boys (in my house you’re known as the boys)

"Joel in One"....oh boy.........you get a cookie for that one x'D
