Hey Peaches! The games come to an explosive end. But with the games over, how does the show end.... We have a couple of things to say about it.

Squid Game S3E06 Watch Along

Comments

Stephen Morris

After I was spoiled on the twist, I refused to watch this season. Adam summed it up perfectly.

Should have stopped at 1. If they didn't have anything meaningful to add in 2 & 3, they shouldn't have bothered. These characters, and the viewers, went through this for nothing.

I don't know if anti-catharsis is the right word or even really a thing, but it's how I'd describe the ending. I liked that about it, but maybe that's because I kind of sensed that's where we were going. I think Jay's right on the money when he brings up the grossness attached to treating Squid Game like a normal mass marketed IP. Like if I'm in Hwang Dong-hyuk's shoes and watching my intensely anti-capitalist art that I've worked on for about a decade, a work that is not a labor of love but a labor of rage, become Mr Beast's entire personality along with all these video game-tie-ins, merchandising, Halloween costumes, etc... this fully tracks. It feels spiteful, and I think it is spiteful, but I consider that a feature and not a bug. All that being said, 100% agree that you couldn't pay me to watch the American version.

I think the front man did change. You can tell he was really hurting with the main character dying and doing by what's right by him by giving the money to his daughter. I also don't think the front man knew there was a squid game in L.A and his look on his face was oh this is bigger than even I thought.

matt

Adam summed it up perfectly. I will not watch a US season

Shennon

I agree. I thought the Front Man was surprised by seeing it in LA.

pReview'd with Adam and Jay

The front man has a really good poker face. We couldn’t read him at all. Not sure if that was a directors note or acting choice. Like they were letting the audience decide what the front man was feeling.

Joey (Hustlemando)

Yeah I agree, this was awful. I’m like, yes we understand the message and agree with it so why couldn’t they add some hope in there for us. I don’t feel there was any reason why they couldn’t have at least let our women trio make it out of the games. They were my favorite part of this show. There was at least 2 ways I came up with that the mom could have had a chance to make it through the jump rope game. And not one of the VIPs got crawnched? How dare they. I’m glad the baby made it and that the dad made it back to strawberry hat, but that wasn’t enough for me for the final season. They could have given us something more. It was really all for nothing. And now in the real world everyone is still learning the wrong lessons from all this. I’m dreading the day I see a news headline that says they found a real island where similar stuff like this has happened. This show has probably given real life billionaires too many ideas 🤦🏻‍♂️. In summary, American squid game show? Not even once.

Frustrating Unrelenting Cynical Korean Television Having Inverse Satisfaction

I have to disagree. I get it would be satisfying to see one man stand against the greed and evil of billionaires and general corporate greed, and make a meaningful change, making the world a better place just by how he stands up to it. And most American tv shows would do that. But it's not realistic. Even if every one of the VIPs was killed in the final episode, it wouldn't change anything. Making the world better by killing people just doesn't work. Change is slow. Change is painful. One man standing up against human nature is just going to get squished and forgotten. The most one man can hope to do is to inspire others by his actions. If that man can inspire other people, and then those people get better and inspire others. Well, eventually the world can change for the better. So did Gi-hun inspire others? Make them better people? I think so. His sacrifice clearly saved Gyu-young (the guard) from killing herself. Did it change the front man? Maybe. Probably. He certainly seemed to be engaged in a lot of self-reflection as he watched Gi-hun through the games. Any of the VIPs changed from watching his sacrifice? No. No, probably not. But the world is a tiny bit better from what he did. And maybe, just maybe, the people he inspired will help make it even better. And that's really the best anyone could hope for.

This. ALL of this 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾

I think Adam's and Jay's emotional reactions were spot on but I disagree that it was a bad ending. There was no way the billionaires were going to change, and life shows us time and time again that the people on top don't get punished. I agree with Jason Ms comments about the front man changing, but it was super subtle and therefore lost its meaning as the writers probably wanted to leave it up to audience interpretation. I wish they could have given us a little more closure on the minor characters Why not make that phone call in 011s car have been to tell her the good news that her daughter was found? I'm glad the guys daughter was good but where did he get the money (I thought that's why he was there), but really I found myself not caring because I kept thinking 011 was involved in his plot somehow. 456 was not a good person. He had abandoned his own daughter really before season 1 due to his problems and then completely left her at the end of season 1. He wanted to protect the baby but the writers gave him hardly any dialogue trying to convince the others to spare the baby. I also think it's interesting that no one (including Adam and Jay unless I missed it) were upset that there was a pregnant lady participating in the games but everyone got furious when the baby was in danger. Kind of shows how we don't care about the life of the mother. Of course the other players didn't care about the baby as long as they got their money just like we'll cut subsidies for food to poor children as long as people can get their tax breaks. The ending sucks, but that's life.

I just want to say I truly appreciate Adam's rant on the subject in that it's the kind of thing I completely agree with when it comes to, for example, the Star Wars sequels. That entire trilogy just felt like a huge slap in the face in some ways for me (esp regarding Luke's character and Leia and Han's son going down the same path) even if I recognize why it worked for some people, or could see some ways it MIGHT have worked for me with a few story tweaks. THAT SAID I still enjoyed the ending of this season because in a way it does reflect what Tolkien calls the 'long defeat' which is basically that victories against evil in this world are only ever incremental and just enough to stem the tide. And in a way, the ending was very moving. I truly am not trying to make some political/ideological point BUT the fact that the ending revolved around protecting an innocent baby and still recognizing the value of doing that DESPITE the fact that it hadn't 'earned' it, it was possible it's life would be less than ideal, that we live in such a bleak world, or where human nature is so up for grabs, for me was intensely moving and a real statement of hope. And I do think it at the least impacted No-eul and maybe the Frontman (although it's ambiguous I guess if he approved of what was going on in LA). In a way I felt it an interesting complement to Andor in that we can't always win (at least not yet) when we fight against the system, sometimes we just have to find the happy endings we can, and take a stand any way. There were still people who acted honorably, even if they didn't make it out. But I agree I have no need to see an American season or watch more misery-porn on the topic. And I hate all the tie-ins which monetize it and totally miss the point (but that was happening even before this season). I found all the debate around "voting" to decide who to kill freakishly funny (it's okay, because we voted on it!), and the whole discourse around the people who were willing to leave BEFORE the learned the baby would get a share suddenly getting so pissed off somebody would get a handout they felt wasn't deserved to also be (sadly) illustrative of how we view people we feel haven't 'earned' something, or who will cut into our own profits. And the way we will vote for something against OUR OWN INTERESTS (they all died in the end) just to make sure somebody else doesn't get something. In some ways I find it a discourse on the parable of the vineyard with the 'early' workers grumbling against the 'later' workers. In some ways maybe even applicable to things like birthright citizenship along with any other group of "inconvenient" or "useless" people (whether that's the disabled, the unborn, immigrants, the poor, single mothers, etc.) that we want to throw out like trash in our current system (or simply don't provide enough support for). Plus some of the debate over how much these people 'deserve' to be in the games, vs how much they are choosing to be there, and how much that choice is itself driven by external factors. (And to be sure I think it's a sliding scale - I think some people are about as culpable as they can be for their poor/greedy choices. Some people are screwed over by a system they can't win because it's not designed for them.) So in a way I'm not sure this was meant to have a happy ending, but be more of a cautionary tale of where rampant dehumanization leads (a path which I think we are well on our way towards in the U.S.). I wouldn't even describe myself as 'anti capitalist' as a general rule, but what we've got here sure ain't it.

Season 1 felt like a 10/10 and was so good. I didn't think we needed more after that. I also feel like I was put through an emotional ringer for no reason. I am just a glutton for punishment if I watch the American version.

I feel like the American squid game was always going on. i think we only saw the Korean squid game and that's the scary part.. also not a great ending,, your right about thinking its over by wiping out the island and rich fucks before then making the point like its everywhere. still a bummer but I love the ending of screamers from the 90s for that exact reason. this ending felt like the movie the mist. just character after character making stupid decisions the entire show.......now I'm rambling. I rate this hopefully 0 out of 0 new squid game projects.
