Oh a conversation about a slang and etymology? How did you know it was my birthday? IIRC cap does have origins in generations prior to this current one we all complain about though it definitely came into prominence recently. I do think that all generations probably have about the same relationship with slang that "has a longer walk to meaning" it's just the ones that stick around are the ones that feel more real and closer to us. For instance, in the 90s, pop culture such as TMNT pushed a lot of surfer slang at our generation, but a lot of it, such as 'tubular' which is one of those words where it takes a few steps to get to it seem to have fallen out as rapidly as they came in (at least outside of surfers. I don't know if they still use it, or if it's gone back to just being a descriptor of a good wave) while others stick around.
