The 2nd time the dragon got hit, its body was pierced. Vermax was still young, so his scales hadn't hardened yet. You could see blood pouring out of its neck in the water. It was done regardless of what Jace did.

I'd feel more about Jace passing if they had written him a little better, like it's wild how I feel harder for the dragons than the kids. I'll admit that but I surprisingly cried more for Helena's son, Jaehaerys, than I did for Jace.
