Daniel M.

So this was the first episode following 9/11. Which after the biggest tragedy in most Americans at that times life, if not ever in the country, was quite an awkward time for comedy in general, even more so for a comedy on the more extreme end. After the fact, for those who didn't really live through it, I can see the episode just being plain weird. But for someone who was a teenage at the time, and still today, I think they did as good a job as they could've. There was a pretty significant scare of potential chemical warfare/anthrax, hence the gas masks. Airports started with (at that time) extreme caution over mundane items, hence Cartmans kids scissors being viewed as a weapon. Some people were watching the news constantly terrified of what may still come, like Sharon. And I think they did a pretty good job of showing sympathy for the Afghani people, and showing their perspective, within the context of a 20ish minute adult cartoon. Rather than just not discussing what had happened, or making a really dark episode in what was already a pretty dark time, they decided to just basically make a Looney Tunes episode. It's not one of my top episodes, but put into a really tough spot, I think they did the best they couldve.
