Josh Hanson

The majority of Kevin Smith's movies are based in his home state of New Jersey, primarily around the small towns of Highlands, Leonardo and Red Bank, areas in which he lived in and worked in growing up before he started making movies. This is his first film, filmed in the very same store where he worked as a clerk, so the movie is quite autobiographical, based on his experiences as a clerk. He's not Canadian, but I know he's a big fan of DeGrassi and of Canada in general. Jay is based entirely on the actor who plays him, Kevin's best friend Jason Mewes. He's a childhood friend of Kevin's that he used to hang around with and who was essentially playing himself as this character. And yes Silent Bob is Kevin Smith, the perfect counterpart to Jay, who never stops talking.
